I went Curling last night and it was so much FUN!! When I tried it in high school, I found it cold and boring. But I think that was because I was afraid to fall on the ice and look foolish. Now that I’m older and have lots of experience looking stupid and foolish, I’m comfortable looking silly which is what made it so fun.

As a result of the fun, I’m all sore and bruised on my right hip because I’d fall over basically every time I’d throw the rock (I suspect “throwing the rock” isn’t the correct term). Even though I exercise regularly, a lot of my muscles are sore from all the sweeping.

I didn’t find it cold because I bought some snuggly warm sweatpants and hoodie from Roots. Buying new clothes and then getting to show them off makes me very happy!! Even though it’s blatant advertising, I like that the sweatpants have Roots written on the butt because they draw attention to my ass. I like my ass. I know that sounds all conceited, but it’s so hard to find the body love that it’s fun to have at least one part of my body that I think is cute!!!!

I actually have photographic evidence of me curling!! If you know anything about curling, you’ll be horrified by my bad form and understand why I kept falling on every shot. I'm not falling in this picture because my hand is on the ice.

The other entertaining part of the evening was realizing how bizarre my co-workers and I seem to others. Our instructor asked a couple of us where we work because we’re such an “eclectic bunch.” See, my office is really gay! No, seriously. I’d say 99% of us are queer folks, and the content of our work is also gay. I suspect that the curling club in east Toronto had never seen a group quite like us. Super femmey and ultra masculine gay men. Sporty dykes (if you turned on Women’s Golfing and saw some of my co-workers, you’d think “total Lesbian”), and very Toronto urban dykes (I was trying to think of anyone in the media who has the same style, and the only one who comes close is Shane on “The L Word”). There’s also a prominence of piercings, tattoos, multi-coloured hair and army pants.

My co-workers really relished yelling “Hard” or “You know you like it hard” to the sweepers. We all fell down more than once and would laugh at each other (cause we're mature). Fun, fun times.

Because of the extreme amount of gayness on the rink, it reminded me of

moosesal’s fun Spike/Xander curling story Your House or Mine.

In conclusion, I like curling. I may actually do it again!!

Is that advertising on your ass? You know, if you are going to continue curling perhaps you could make some extra money by renting your ass out. And by that I mean putting different logos on it. ;-) Sorry, couldn't resist.

I guess I'm one of many who just don't get curling. Maybe you just have to be Canadian - or a re-incarnated Canadian. I've watched a little on the Olympics, but that's it.

I remember a scene in an ep of Due South that I loved as all the Canadians in the consulate drop everything to watch a curling match and act as if it's the World Cup, the Superbowl and the World Series combined and the Americans are just looking at them with these 'what-in-the-hell-is-wrong-with-you-people?' looks. It was hysterical. I know, as someone else commented above, that Paul Gross made a curling movie. I taped it a couple of weeks ago off a local station, but haven't had time to watch it yet. I will soon, I hope.

Have fun curling. And don't fall down too much. It would be a shame if your ass got bruised. *g*

Previously I didn't get curling or enjoy it, but it was way more fun this time than I remembered it. It's possible that I like it because by the end I was getting pretty good. Still falling down, but actually making good shots (while falling down). I was feeling very Canadian though - curling and wearing Roots (a Canadian clothing company).

That Due South episode sounds hysterical, although the average Canadian gets more excited about hockey. When the Canadian Men's Hockey team won the gold last olympics, people were driving up and down honking their horns and celebrating. People poured out into Yonge Street (THE main street in Toronto) waving Canadian flags.

The Paul Gross curling movie (Men with Brooms) is very fun and totally worth seeing if you're a Paul Gross fan.

Yeah. We were trying to drive *out* of Toronto after a Tafelmusik concert. I was happy and all but damn. It took *ages* to get home!! Plus I was a bit pissed that the women's team didn't warrant national hysteria.

I actually have never seen Due South, sadly, though I think I would like it, but I'm a fan of Molly Parker since I saw here in Twitch City.

You were at a Tafelmusik concert?! My friend recently (as in this summer) participated in one of the Tafelmusik programmes! Getting out of the city must have been frustrating! I agree with you that the women's team deserved the same level of excitement. I remember the women's game more and it was really exciting!

Twitch City!! I haven't seen that in years, that was a fun show. I also enjoy Molly Parker. Due South is a great show that I keep meaning to re-watch because it's been so many years.

Uh. *kicks self* This is getting slightly weird for me because I promised myself I'd keep LJ unidentifiable from RL, 'cos of what I mostly started the account for (i.e. reading, writing, and commenting on X-rated slash :) and I'm a teensy bit paranoid about it - but it's really hard to keep bits of oneself out of LJ! For me anyway. And I almost certainly have met or heard of your friend. Baroque Summer Institute, right?

There is basically *nothing* on TV (at least, the free non-cable stuff) over here that I want to watch :( not that I watched much at home (two hours a week - Buffy and Angel!) I got the Firefly series DVD a couple of weeks ago and we're working our way through - only three left, I'm drawing them out a bit.

Wow! My friend was at the Baroque Summer Institute last summer! Very cool. I also have tried to keep my RL separate from LJ, and of course keep failing spectacularly (ie. this entry). At this point anyone who knows me would totally know this is my LJ! Most of my friends know about my LJ, I'm just not keen on work and some relatives finding it.

I have a really big digital cable package and would have a hard time without it, cause I love tv! I'm glad you've got the Firefly DVDs, they're so excellent ... if only there were more episodes of it.

Heh. Yeah. Not going any further with the TBSI refs although you could maybe ID me now if you really wanted to :) though why you would I'm not sure. As you say, I'm not so keen on work or *any* relatives finding it. This is fortunately not likely, as none of my relatives (including my SO) even know that I *have* an LJ. ;)

You have much more restraint than I do, most of my friends and some co-workers know about my LJ. I'm more concerned about bosses and relatives.

Mm, well, I get the impression you work in a more open-minded, varied environment. I work in a male-dominated field with a lot of lovely but highly traditional people. I don't think *any* of my co-workers would get it. Perhaps I'm selling them short, but...not gonna risk it. :)

I'll share it with my SO eventually. Really, I will. :) It's not that I think he'll have a problem with the slash (though I don't think he'd be into it particularly) - it's just that the only time I've heard him mention fanfic he was pretty dismissive about it. I suspect, though, that he's never read anything really *good*.

My workplace is definitely very open-minded which makes it a fun place to work. I really love my co-workers so going to work is an okay thing ... most of the time. I can definitely see people who are more traditional, especially men, having difficulty with the slash. I wouldn't risk it either!

I have a friend who has a similar perception of fanfic as your SO. I've tried to get her to read a couple of good fics, because I know she's only read some of the bad stuff. But she isn't interested, which is okay. :)

Oh, and I've now FINALLY gotten home from work after a 12+ hour stint, and I am going to watch the antipenultimate Firefly episode. And drink tea. And hopefully get a footrub. :)

Off to do the same long shift today. And tomorrow. *groan*

But there are still 2 more episodes of Firefly :) and we have Serenity also (which I have seen).
