It was awesome to recognize some of my favourite people on my flist who produce such great work. I want them to get showered with praise.

And for the heck of it, I thought I'd do my list of My Five Favourite Movies of 2008:

I saw a lot of movies this year, a lot. I went a little wild before I started back at school! However, it does mean that I saw all the movies I wanted to except for Tropic Thunder and Gran Turino (I do plan to see both of them) so I had a lot of movies to choose from!

1. Wall-E: This movie captured my heart and delighted my film geek side with its silent filmesque beginning sequence and use of Hello Dolly footage. I love that it's a movie that begins with a bleak apocalyptic landscape inhabited by an adorable robot who ultimately provides hope and heart for all of us. An animated movie that even my mom loved (and she doesn't like animated movies).

2. Slumdog Millionaire: The perfect mix of gritty realism with hope and happiness; a mix that makes it an uplifting movie with substance and lack of cheesiness. It's the kind of movie that I kept thinking about and getting teary days later. I was so delighted that it won Golden Globes because it really deserves the recognition. I've seen it twice and was just telling a friend that I would see it again: it's that good.

3. Milk: A wonderful biography of a fascinating man who was part of something larger, and knew it. Sean Penn does such a fantastic job of being Harvey Milk: all aspects of the man. One of the most moving aspects of the movie was how relevant this movie feels now: with Proposition 8 and all the argument over gay marriage. Also, all the actual footage from the time really adds to the verisimilitude and makes it such a rich movie-going experience.

4. The Wrestler: I just saw this movie and am still processing how amazing the movie and Mickey Rourke's performance is. Moving without being manipulative. A wonderful study of a broken man who's trying not to give up. I especially love the camera work in this movie and how the use of the handheld following the characters really pulls us into this world.

5. The Dark Knight: A fantastic movie about trying to be good in a bad world, and how close those trying to be good are from going down the wrong path. Heath Ledger's Joker is a phenomenal accomplishment, a highlight in an already excellent movie.

And a bonus favourite one:
Iron Man: A truly delightful film which Robert Downey Jr just owns. I love the premise of how Tony Stark is righting the wrongs he's been responsible for - and also how much delight he has in creating Iron Man (well, the second time in his home lab with the adorable robots!).

Clearly robots were a theme for me and movies this year! A good theme! :D
