cordelianne: (But I'm a Cheerleader kissing)

Lots of TV, same-sex marriage and fic recs

Happy Wednesday everyone!! I’m excited because tonight there’s new episodes of Veronica Mars, Lost, Bones AND the Amazing Race!!! That’s a lot of tv, but it’s all good tv so I’m happy.

Yesterday the weather was insane. There were snow flurries for a few seconds, then they stopped. Half an hour later, there was hail!! Fortunately it didn’t last too long. And then there were snow flurries again. Nothing has stayed and I’m holding out hope this is the last snow for the year. But it’s like the weather has PMS.

Lots of tv has been watched by me the last couple of days:

24 ‘10pm-11pm’ 5:16, Who’s evil now?

Yesterday when I entered the boardroom at work, I told my co-workers: “The President is evil.” And wasn’t greeted by any surprise, so I added “on 24.” I’m entertained that they clearly believe that Bush is evil so didn’t have a reaction to my statement. As the episode progressed and everyone was all “the Vice-President is evil” I began to suspect that this was too obvious and guessed that the President would be evil. It’s still a fun twist, and I suspect that there will be more twists associated with this soon. But the big question is: “Is President Logan actually smart enough to be evil, or is he the best actor ever?”

Also, how awesome was it when Jack emerged from the flames and smoke CARRYING Henderson?! As well, I’m warming up to Audrey as she becomes more willing to make hard decisions and have people be mad at her; it makes her a better match for Jack … until she dies (that’s not a spoiler, just random speculation).

Grey’s Anatomy ‘The Name of the Game’ 2:18

I was delighted to see Laurie Metcalfe (Jackie on Roseanne). She was marvelous and totally made me cry when she was giving her daughter advice. Damn those manipulative crying moments, they get me every time!

I’m enjoying the way that they’re dealing with Meredith’s dad. Not my favourite episode but good fluffy entertainment as always.

Gilmore Girls ‘I’m OK, You’re OK’ 6:17, Actually no-one’s okay except for Lane and Paris

My co-worker didn't like the episode because he was annoyed by the bad behaviour: Rory getting back together with Logan, Lorelei not confronting Luke, Luke not realizing he’s being an idiot, and Rory ignoring Lorelei’s wishes.

Now, I enjoyed the episode because I like it when shows have characters behaving the way people do in real life. People are passive aggressive, don’t communicate with their partner, don’t understand what other people are going through, and can generally be insensitive. Of course, people can also be sweet, kind, romantic, and funny which was also on display this episode. I understand it’s hard to watch characters we like being jerks, but it makes the characters more real for me.

I loved that Zack and Mrs. Kim wrote a song together. Those two have some of the funnest interactions. I got teary all over again (yes I’m the biggest sap), when Zack proposed the second time, and Mrs. Kim gave Lane her grandmother’s ring. Also, how great is it that Paris and Doyle are back together?!!

Scrubs ‘My Chopped Liver’ 5:16, Why JD and Turk are the best friends ever!

The past few days I was catching up on the last 5 or 6 Scrubs episodes and basking in my love for the show. It makes me laugh out loud multiple times each episode.

This week’s episode, which was aired out of order and should have aired before last week’s episode (the one we discover that Carla is pregnant). So despite the annoyance of lack of continuity, it was still a fun episode, but the best part was:

Turk (watching Gilmore Girls): Mothers and daughters. They speak so fast but they speak so true.
Turk (on the phone): Did you see it?
J.D (on the phone): I can’t talk about it. I’m so mad at Lorelei right now.

Definitely one of the best moments ever!!!!

In the previous week’s episode I cried and cried when everyone was celebrating Carla’s pregnancy. I am a total sap.

I was going to write about House (with Michelle Trachenberg!) but I was just alerted that the Conservatives are re-opening the same-sex marriage issue and holding a free vote about it. I am very mad and upset by this. WTF?!! No government should be taking away human rights. I recall having an argument with someone before the election in which he refused to believe me that the Tories would do this. This is one instance in which I hate being right. There is hope that this will fail because the Conservatives are a Minority Government and the other parties (Bloc Quebecois, NDP and most Liberals), who make up the majority, will vote in support of same-sex marriage. But still…. It’s hard to feel reasonable when we could potentially lose human rights.

To try and end on a happy note I wanted to rec some really good fic I’ve been reading recently:

[livejournal.com profile] globalfruitbat’s Heroes which is a beautiful and addictive post-Not Fade Away ensemble story.

[livejournal.com profile] octoberxsong’s Placebo which is an amazing Spike/Angel story that could also be a manifesto for the pairing.

Also, if you love Xander, check out the masterlist for The Replacement Celebration -- A Two Xanders Are Better Than One Brouhaha. It’s double your Xander goodness!

I missed Michelle Trachtenberg? Ah, man ...

But mostly I wrote to tell you I've never heard a better explanation for our present weather than the one you gave. Yes, the weather has PMS ... and it's not nice to fool wish Mother Nature ...

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Michelle was enjoyable, although her role did have some similarities to Dawn. She felt over-protected by her mom and would complain about it a lot. (Her mom was really over-protective.)

I'm glad you like my PMS explanation! I'm hoping that soon it'll really start to be spring-like.

[identity profile] ozma914.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
It has been springlike here, but only for a day at a time -- usually followed by storms, then high winds, then cold again. I hope that's not going to be the cycle for the whole summer, but it's not looking good for this coming week.

I understand why Michelle's mom is overprotective, with all those fans out there salivating over her. Oh, wait -- it was a character!
My daughter has a good friend whose parents have over-protectivity problems. They won't let their daughter visit mine at our house because it's not in their town -- even though we're only about ten miles away. I try not to gripe about other parents, but they've got a 15 year old girl who almost never gets out of the house; not exactly preparation for real life.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's like we're being taunted with spring by getting a nice day here and there. It sounds like your weather might be worse than what we've had because the flurries-hail-flurries thing didn't last for very long. I'm hoping for a nice, but not too hot summer because it gets too humid here.

I always felt that my mom was overprotective but by the time I was 15, I had a lot of freedom. You're definitely correct that not letting her leave the house doesn't prepare her for real life.

[identity profile] ozma914.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
It gets very humid here, too. I don't really want a hot summer, but if I have to make a choice between a bad summer and a good winter, I'll take summer any day. I hate the cold *that* much!

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also not a cold fan, and would be happier with the hot summer as well. I get cold REALLY easily so I fare a lot better in the hot weather. The only problem is that I burn ridiculously easily (but not vampire level of burning!) so I have to be careful about being out in the sun.

[identity profile] ozma914.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't burn easily at all, but having not spent much time outside the last couple of years, I'd have to be careful, too.

But, as with you, I get cold incredibly easily, so I spend about half the year completely miserable. I have a life here now that I wouldn't leave, but why I didn't head for warmer climates when I was younger, I don't know. Apparently I foolishly thought global warming would take care of things for me.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's hard to leave an area when your family and life are there, even if warmer weather is beckoning!

[identity profile] ozma914.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
When I start getting those big book deals, I'm going to have two houses -- one here and my winter place somewhere *way* warmer. I haven't decided exactly where, yet -- although I'm leaning toward Hawaii.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hawaii would be wonderful!! I've never been there but it looks beautiful. I love to imagine what I'd do with lots of money!

lots of money

[identity profile] ozma914.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'd hire a staff, for starters. Then leave them to take care of the routine while I travel around the country with my laptop on the passenger seat and a smile on my face.

Re: lots of money

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hiring a staff would be awesome! I'd love a chauffeur because I hate to drive but love the convenience of someone taking me places. One of the things that's always top of my "if I win the lottery list" is a big flat screen plasma tv. I'd also do lots of traveling, and share with my family & friends.

Re: lots of money

[identity profile] ozma914.livejournal.com 2006-04-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I like to drive, except on bad days when it seems like everyone's pulling out in front of me. I've always wanted to drive to every state in the union, although of course (as Xander never got to find out) getting to Hawaii would be a problem.

But I hate -- absolutely hate -- doing housework, and I can't stand to cook. So -- cook and maid for me, and a secretary to pay the bills and write letters and such. And I'd take them with me when I travel, so we could all stop at your place and watch the new Vampire Slayer movie (which I produced) on your plasma TV. Hey, money speaks in Hollywood, too -- I'll bet if I threw enough cash at them we could reunite most of the BtVS cast with Joss writing and directing.

24 - I too guess the Prez was evil; they were pushing the VP Is Evil plot too hard for it to be true. I hate this plot twist; it makes no sense. Then again 24 doesn't often make sense.

Grey's Anatomy - I just started watching this show a few weeks ago. So far I have yet to find any of those sniffly patient scenes remotely moving. I'm hard to seduce, I guess.

Gilmore Girls - I used to love this show! It makes me sad Luke and Lorelai got together after I stopped watching it.

And yay, recs. Hopefully I'll get to them some day.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Then again 24 doesn't often make sense. Never a truer word. It used to bother me, but I've now embraced the cracktasticness of 24! I'm guessing that the President isn't really evil because it doesn't make sense, and it'll turn out to be another red herring.

I started watching Grey's Anatomy last year and was kind of meh about it. But it's really improved, and has had some interesting story lines. It's not the best show but I find it good fluff.

That's too bad you're no longer watching Gilmore Girls, the last 2 seasons have been excellent! And I adore Luke and Lorelei!

I hope you enjoy the stories, and you should definitely check out the Two Xanders list *cough*one of them is my stories*cough*! There's so much fic reading to do, I haven't even read all the fic written by my flist yet!

[identity profile] tkp.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you really have to embrace the cracktasticness! I really did on S1-4, but I'm beginning to think it was easier to get over on DVD, which is how I watched those first 4 seasons...There's something about the commercials and waiting a week in between each ep that allows me to take a step back and be critical instead of getting all into it, I think.

Yeah, Grey's Anatomy fluff! You put your finger on it, there. The thing is I find it entertaining but I can't see myself getting *into* it. This is probably why.

Hmmm. So GG is on S6? I stopped watching at the end of S3 because I felt like it was getting stupid. But I LOVED the first two seasons. So, it may be worth watching the rest of 3 and all of 4 to get to seasons 5 and 6? I might just. I love Lorelai soooo much.

Oh! You did a Two Xanders fic! Cool. I'm reading Entre's right now.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I watch all my shows on my PVR (like a Tivo), so I always fast forward through the commercials. It's almost like watching it on DVD except for the waiting a week part. I try not to think too much about the stories on 24 because they start to make no sense and major inconsistencies become apparent.

Yeah, I enjoy Grey's Anatomy but I'm not "into" it. I normally watch it while I'm on LJ, and sometimes have to rewind parts of the episode because I realized I was too distracted by LJ!!

I recall enjoying season 3 of Gilmore Girls but season 4 was pretty bad. I was worried about the show for most of that season, but the last episode or so was awesome. To warn you I am a fan of shows taking their characters to dark places (I'm one of those fans of seasons 6 & 7 of Buffy), and Gilmore Girls does that, particularly with Rory, in season 5 and 6. Not as dark as on Buffy, but dark for Gilmore Girls.

Entre's fic is awesome! She writes Xander so well and she's the reason I'm much fonder of Riley now. My story's from the perspective of suave Xander and involves Spike, it's here (http://cordelianne.livejournal.com/36757.html) if you're interested. Oh, and there may be a mention of Spike being shorter than Xander! hee!

[identity profile] globalfruitbat.livejournal.com 2006-04-05 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so angry at teh government -- I've really jsut had to stop reading the paper (not the Globe, the National Post et al) and listening to the radio in the mornings, because I get too angry.

Thank you for the rec!

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so angry as well! I feel like there need to be protests about this, and that I should be reading up on this more, but it's so upsetting that I keep trying to avoid the media. And yeah, I hate the National Post as well!

No problem about the rec, I love the story!! I'm a little behind in reading it, but that just means I get to read a whole bunch at once!
