So how come you came up with Anne? (btvs 3:1)

I'm taking advantage of the 3 day weekend and am visiting my family in Kingston. It's weird to be back in Kingston because there's always small things that have changed (a road where there wasn't one before), but basically it's the same. I'm very very thankful that my brother has wireless internet access set up in the house and that I brought my laptop. *clings to laptop* Of course, I'm now behind on my LJ reading because I've only just logged in now that my mom's gone to bed. We talked and talked, and then watched Moulin Rouge.

I did the worst thing today, and it was totally unintentional but I still feel really bad about it. I was up really late last night doing laundry, gathering my tax info (so my dad can do my taxes), packing, and organizing my tv recording schedule. Even though I had set my two alarms so I'd have plenty of time to get ready and meet my friend, who was driving me (and a friend of hers) to Kingston, I completely slept in. Not only did I sleep in ridiculously late, but the ringer was turned off on my phone (because I work late nights, I frequently turn the ringer off so I'm not woken up and it was still turned off from the previous night). So, not only did I keep 2 people waiting, I also caused my friend to really worry about me because she couldn't get a hold of me. I still feel really guilty even though my friend and I worked it out, and she was really understanding about it. I just hate being irresponsible and inconveniencing people.

In the car ride we did have a fun discussion about whether we'd sleep with Sawyer or Jack from Lost. The unanimous agreement was Sawyer. My friend suggested that Jack would probably cry, or be really clingy afterwards. We were torn about Jin and Sayid, but I think we all leaned more towards Sayid. I also noted that I'd sleep with Ana-Lucia because I think Michelle Rodriguez is HOT!!

Changing topics entirely, I've seen the username meme floating around and have enjoyed reading how everyone chose their username. I love talking about how I came up mine so I had to do it as well.

Write a little paragraph about your name, why you chose it, what it means to you, etc.

Many years ago (pre-Buffy fandom & LJ), I needed a username that wasn't my real name and a lot of ones I wanted were already in use. While brainstorming I thought about my various interests and, of course, my thoughts turned to L.M.Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. So, long before the horror of combo names like Bennifer, Brangelina and TomKat, I decided to combine Cordelia and Anne into one name. It's inspired by this passage in Anne of Green Gables:

"Will you please call me Cordelia?" she said eagerly.

"CALL you Cordelia? Is that your name?"

"No-o-o, it's not exactly my name, but I would love to be called Cordelia. It's such a perfectly elegant name."

"I don't know what on earth you mean. If Cordelia isn't your name, what is?"

"Anne Shirley," reluctantly faltered forth the owner of that name, "but, oh, please do call me Cordelia. It can't matter much to you what you call me if I'm only going to be here a little while, can it? And Anne is such an unromantic name."

"Unromantic fiddlesticks!" said the unsympathetic Marilla. "Anne is a real good plain sensible name. You've no need to be ashamed of it."

"Oh, I'm not ashamed of it," explained Anne, "only I like Cordelia better. I've always imagined that my name was Cordelia--at least, I always have of late years. When I was young I used to imagine it was Geraldine, but I like Cordelia better now. But if you call me Anne please call me Anne spelled with an E."

"What difference does it make how it's spelled?" asked Marilla with another rusty smile as she picked up the teapot.

"Oh, it makes SUCH a difference. It LOOKS so much nicer. When you hear a name pronounced can't you always see it in your mind, just as if it was printed out? I can; and A-n-n looks dreadful, but A-n-n-e looks so much more distinguished. If you'll only call me Anne spelled with an E I shall try to reconcile myself to not being called Cordelia."

A few years later when I became a Buffy fan, I loved that cordelianne also connects to two characters in BtVS/AtS. It particularly amuses me that Buffy used Anne as a pseudonym because that name is now part of my pseudonym. [Interesting historical sidebar: I used to use Anne as my pseudonym at one of my jobs, long before I discovered BtVS. Anne is an excellent pseudonym because it doesn't encourage discussion.] I also like that Cordelia is a character in one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, King Lear.

My username makes me very happy because I feel that it accurately reflects me: romantic and dramatic, yet also practical and sensible. It also wonderfully connects to three things I love: L.M.Montgomery and Anne, all things Buffyverse, and Shakespeare.

(I'm too lazy to do the other parts of the meme.*g*)

One last thing: If you haven't already checked out [livejournal.com profile] earth_vexer's new icons here, they're wonderful!! I'm now heading off to grab lots and lots, and exclaim with glee.

lots in a name

That's a truly fun and interesting story, and I loved the connection it makes between AoGG and BtVS. I also think Anne had a very advanced understanding of the importance of names.

I also found your discussion of how things have changed interesting; it's the reason I haven't gone back to my grandparents' home in Kentucky. Some of the old ancestral buildings have been torn down, and they've strip mined the mountain that towered right across the road, dominating everything in sight. I'd prefer to remember it as it was. On a related note, at least half the buildings up and down the street I live on have been replaced or completely remodeled in the last 20 years; if I'd been gone that long I wouldn't recognize the place.

Anne's fascinated with names and naming. When she arrives at Green Gables, she names a variety of places because she thinks they have boring names. (Hopefully the quote has intrigued you for the potential of reading AoGG in the summer!)

It's sad when places of significance get torn down, like at your grandparent's home. I can understand why you wouldn't want to go back because it sounds like there's been a lot of drastic change.

Everyone on your street must be in a remodeling phase! It was weird to be driving in Kingston because there's some areas that have been completely altered (they tore down a mall and made it big box stores instead), but there's other areas where the same decrepit buildings remain virtually unchanged.

a rose by any other name would be called something else

Oh, I was already plenty intrigued about reading AoGG!

*bounces in excitement!*

The title of your comment (very funny btw), actually reminds me of a line from AofGG!!

I read in a book once that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but I've never been able to believe it. I don't believe a rose WOULD be as nice if it was called a thistle or a skunk cabbage.

Hee ... I really like Anne. Which I guess means I really like the author, of course.

[identity profile] lillianmorgan.livejournal.com 2006-04-15 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh those icons were fantastic weren't they? :)
I'm glad you did the meme. I didn't remember that scene from AoGG and so it was nice to know how you came to choose your name. Mine is also a pseudonym too, but I kinda regret choosing such a name that could so easily be my real name, as it were, because so often people think it *is* my real name. I never even considered using my real name on LJ yet once I got here so many people do! Have people thought that you were Cordelia or Anne? :) And how nice that it connects two fannish pursuits :)
because I think Michelle Rodriguez is HOT!!
No way. Stephanie Romanov is hotter ;)
I hope you have a fun time with your family though you must be pleased to still be connected :)

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore the icons! They're all so wonderful.
I love any excuse to discuss AoGG and how I came up with my username, so I'm pleased you got to find out the origin of it.

Have no fear, I've always assumed your username is a pseudonym especially because it's close to Lilah Morgan. Is it partially a reference? See now I'm all intrigued, you should do the meme (um, unless you have ... I'm way behind on reading LJ right now). I've never had anyone think my name is Cordelia or Anne, as far as I know.

No way. Stephanie Romanov is hotter ;) hee! She is very hot!! Rodriguez is more butch, which I'm into. :)

I'm excited to see that you've posted a lot of fics, which I'll be reading in the next couple of days!

[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com 2006-04-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I totally thought it was your name. *facepalm* Crazydiamondsue was my LJ name - my writing, my journal name. I never gave a thought to getting into fandom when I created it and I never thought about my real name (or real nickname) being used on a fandom basis. Doesn't bother me, though, Sue is an innocuous enough name. Not like I'm named Sapphire, or something. *g* Although I still find it funny when people email me fb and call me "Crazy" or "Crazydiamond" though.

[identity profile] lillianmorgan.livejournal.com 2006-04-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Heee! See that's why I asked [livejournal.com profile] cordelianne if people thought that was *her* real name, because everyone has a headspin moment when they find it it's not mine. I never even considered using my real name (mainly because it's waaaaaaay boring) but when I started nosing my way 'round LJ I realised what an anomaly it was, I'd say a large percentage of people use their names or variations on it. Funny!

[identity profile] kittyzams.livejournal.com 2006-04-16 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, don't feel guilty! We all do things like that at one point or another. And everything worked out okay in the end, right? It sounds like you're having a blast with your mom, and the car ride up there seems like it was so much fun! I'm definitely with you on the Sawyer boat. I think Michelle Rodriguez is hot too, especially in Girl Fight. Hmm, although it seems like just about every girl on Lost is very good looking. I'm more of a Kate girl, myself. I think for some odd reason that I tend to navigate more towards people who look like me (dark hair, blue eyes, light skin). I always wonder why that is. I know a lot of people that go for the complete opposites of themselves. I am so curious as to what motivates us to choose certain partners. Anyway, here (http://kittyzams.livejournal.com/5747.html#cutid1) is a link to a pic!spam post of me so you can see what I look like. But I must warn you, that I'm a wee bit embarrassed of all the posing going on there. I really prefer natural shots. It's my sister's fault I tells ya! She's made me model for her photography experiments way too many times! Do you like knowing what LJ people look like? I'm such a curious Betty that I want to know. I want to know EVERYTHING! Anyway, the point to all my rambling is to ask you if you tend to go for people who resemble you or not. Geez! I am full of the blabber. But wait! There's more...

I am completely in love with how you chose your username. Soooo cute! And how awesome that you can fit it into three different fandoms that you love. My username annoys me because I didn't put any thought into it and just used one of my cat's names. Do you have a username nickname that you like to go by? I go by KZ or Miss Kitty, although, that's mostly by LM. ;D What would your UN nickname be? OMG, I cannot shut up, can I? I am done spamming your journal now. I've been working on a paper of the interactionist perspectives on deviance all day, and obviously I needed a break or something. Hee. KZ, over and out! ;D

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I still have some residual guilt but we did work it out, so it's alright. We had really fun car rides both ways (I just returned now). There was lots of pop culture talk (like the Lost discussion) and gossip about people from high school. We recalled this one guy that a friend of mine had dated and none of could remember anything about his personality. We knew he was tall, hot and played the drums in band, and that was it! The only interesting thing we could remember was his name: Edmund. I was saying that I hope I'm remembered as the weird girl or the geeky girl instead of some big blank.

My crush on Michelle Rodiguez originated with Girl Crush!! I like tough and/or butch girls, and I like that she frequently has those kinds of roles. Hmm, although it seems like just about every girl on Lost is very good looking. hee! Practically everyone stranded on the island is really good looking. I would never look that good that many days without hair products and such.

I think for some odd reason that I tend to navigate more towards people who look like me (dark hair, blue eyes, light skin). Interesting, I'm not sure if I do that. If I think back to the various people (guys & girls) I've dated, they don't look much like me. But none of them look similar either, so I suspect I don't have a type. In terms of tv crushes I tend to like the bad/tough boys and girls, the majority of whom are blond (but that might just be reflective of television). Oh, your description describes me as well!!

Your photos are wonderful! You look lovely in all the photos, they're not studio posed and I can tell you're having a good time. Your friends look wonderful too! I have friends who dye their hair nifty colours as well. The only photo of myself I posted on LJ doesn't have my face in it, but you can sort of see my longish curly hair. I'm curling (the sport) in the picture! It's here (http://cordelianne.livejournal.com/32498.html#cutid1). I don't have a digital camera so I don't have many photos of me to upload, but if you're interesting I have a couple of pics I could email you. It's fun to see what LJ people look like because it's like putting a face to a personality.

I think you have an awesome username, it's very fun sounding. It's the "zams" part at the end that gives it a cool sound. I love that it's one of your cat's names!! I haven't gone by a nickname, but I guess it could be CA or something (although that's also the address short form for Canada). hmm...

I love you spamming my LJ and you're welcome to do it anytime!! I'm glad that this was a good distraction from your paper. *hugs*

[identity profile] kittyzams.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, I'm fairly sure that I will be remembered as the weird girl too. Which is fine by me! ;D

My crush on Michelle Rodiguez originated with Girl Crush!!

Teee-heee. Your Freudian slip is showing. :D But yeah, I know I don't look that good after days of sweating and no beauty products. When I was doing the animal rescue work down in Louisiana, I recoiled in horror at teh scary that was me in all my pics.

It's funny, because I don't think I have a certain type either. But then when I'm in a room of several options to choose from, I notice that it's the similar people that catch my eye. Sometimes that makes me feel itchy.

Ooh! Your curling picture is awesome! How fun. *g* Yeah, I can't see much of you, but nice butt! Heeeeeeeeee. Yes! I would love to see some photos of you sometime. Send! Send!

Maybe you could go by Cordy sometimes and Anne other times? For some reason, when I'm squeeing over something, I have such an urge to use nicknames! *smooshes you*

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Teee-heee. Your Freudian slip is showing. heeee! *facepalm* Yep, definitely a Freudian slip. :)

When I was doing the animal rescue work down in Louisiana, I recoiled in horror at teh scary that was me in all my pics. That's excellent that you did animal rescue work in Louisiana. That's such an amazing way to help!

But then when I'm in a room of several options to choose from, I notice that it's the similar people that catch my eye. Sometimes that makes me feel itchy. Hmm, you may be on to something. I often experience that as well, although I often find that I don't like the person who I find attractive. This could be because I'm attracted to the bad boy/girl who often are very aware of how cool and bad they are, and I actually like being with nice and fun people.

I will try to send the photos ... we'll see if I can do it correctly!

I like both Cordy and Anne, and would be happy with either!! *smooshes you*

[identity profile] kittyzams.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
This could be because I'm attracted to the bad boy/girl who often are very aware of how cool and bad they are, and I actually like being with nice and fun people.

You have summed up my entire love life. I am now just patiently awaiting the day that I can be attracted to the people I actually enjoy spending time with. ::taps heel::

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

Hmm it seems like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I had written and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips and hints for beginner blog writers? I'd genuinely appreciate it.

Do you have a spam problem on this site; I also am a blogger, and I was curious about your situation; many of us have developed some nice procedures and we are looking to swap solutions with other folks, why not shoot me an email if interested.

[identity profile] earth-vexer.livejournal.com 2006-04-16 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's really cool. I had assumed that your name was derived from Cordelia Chase and something else (?). I don't remember the part about Anne Shirley wanting to be a Cordelia (of course, back when I read the book/saw the TV movies, I had no reason to remember). I do remember the Anne with an 'e' thing, of course.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't until I did the meme that I realized that people might guess that Cordelia Chase is the inspiration for my username. I love Cordelia (ahem, old school Cordelia), but I don't identify with her. I was much more the Willow in high school and I know that I ramble/babble like her sometimes when I talk.

I do remember the Anne with an 'e' thing, of course. It is the thing that everyone remembers isn't it? It's so connected with the character! My middle name is Anne, and I always used to make a big deal about ensuring people knew it was spelled with an "e" at the end.

I already heard the tale of your username, but I just wanted to say again how much I love it. It just always seemed so ironic to me that I would fall in love with a show that had someone called Cordelia after my whole Anne obsession. Especially when the gal named that was a shopaholic snob turned visionary hero turn possessed scary mom lady.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very happy that you love the story of my username!! *g*

It just always seemed so ironic to me that I would fall in love with a show that had someone called Cordelia after my whole Anne obsession.
I know! BtVS Cordelia is so completely different from Anne's idea of Cordelia; she's basically the opposite of Anne's romanticized notion of Cordelia (especially on BtVS).

Although I was just reflecting that Cordelia is the queen of the school and very popular, she's the girl that most girls aspire to be. In a way, she is the modern day ideal except that on BtVS we see what's wrong with the ideal and that she's not really the ideal girl or a good role model. It sort of reminds me how Anne discovers as she gets older that a lot of the things she wished for and idealized aren't what she really wanted.
