Character Meme

I got this from [livejournal.com profile] karabair, [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue, [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 and [livejournal.com profile] molly_may, and have to do it because I cannot resist something that lets me talk about my love for the characters on my shows:

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I will tell you my top 3 moments or scenes of them.

I'll do any of my fandoms or shows that I watch: BtVS, AtS, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, Scrubs, 24, etc etc (ie. any show you know I watch).

Ah yes, it is one of those decisive Wes moments when he's willing to do the morally ambiguous action that Angel won't do.

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Also, in season 5, he just seems predisposed to shoot people.

Though it is interesting that he's willing to be a murderer the first time, for Fred, in "Supersymmetry" -- and, even though he supposedly doesn't remember that at the point of "Shells," he once again kills for her.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Good point! He's also willing to murder his father (or who he thinks is his father) for Fred in "Lineage".

It's interesting that someone as basically sweet as Fred brings out such violence in Wes. Although maybe it's because she's so sweet, it inspires those reactions?

I've also noticed that in season 5 how he hasn't lost a lot of that ruthlessness which he gained in late season 3 and season 4.

I adore the Buffy & Oz dynamic, which works well because of - as you noted - their different ways of interacting in the world. It makes me think of their first encounter:

Buffy: Try it!

Oz: Try what?

Buffy: Uh... I-I'm sorry.

Oz: Still not clear what I'm supposed to try.

Buffy: Nothing. God, I'm... sorry, I...

Oz: That is a tense person.

I love Oz's very calm reaction to being grabbed by the neck! Oh yeah, and I also love the concept of a shifty bench! :)

[identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
. . .but he doesn't know where it comes from; no wonder he's confused.

Though I wouldn't use murder re: his actions toward not!Roger. He's acting to defend Fred (though possibly by way of overkill) -- Wesley has already decided by the end of the episode to interpret what he did as helping Fred; but it's worth noting that earlier on, when the cyborgs attacked him and not!Roger in the office, Wes moved quickly to protect not!Roger. I think his protective instincts are on display there, at least as much hatred of his father or wanting to do something for Fred.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, Wes can be very protective. And he only shoots not!Roger once it's clear he's a threat and up to no good.

These are all great choices, but I especially love the first one. That was one of the scenes that made me absolutely fall in love with Giles.

I adore Kaylee!!

1. I have intense love for her in "Shindig" and that frilly dress. I can totally relate to her love for big pouffy dresses. I think it's left over from Anne's desire for "puffy sleeves" in AoGG.

I just want to squish her when she's being herself with all those snooty people at the ball:

KAYLEE
(re dancers)
Aren't they something? Like butterflies or little pieces of wrapping paper, blowing around...

And then it's so awesome when she's fitting in:
KAYLEE
By the way, the eighty-ten's the same machine. They changed the plating, hoped no one'd notice!

2. When Mal first meets Kaylee in the "Out of Gas" flashback. I adore that she was noticing the engine's problem while having sex:

KAYLEE: Sure it is. Grav boot ain't your trouble. I seen the trouble plain as day when I's down there on my back. Your reg couple's bad.

BESTER: The... the what?

KAYLEE: Reg couple. Right here. See?

BESTER: No.

KAYLEE: This. I'm pointin' right at it.

[She rolls her eyes, sighs, reaches in, breaks off a part of the engine.]

BESTER: Hey!

KAYLEE: Here.

[She plunks the part in Bester's hand. She reaches back in, tinkers.

Don't really serve much of a purpose, anyway. Just tends to gum up the works when it gets tacked. Hand me that, will ya? So I figure, why even have it? Better to just plug your g-line straight into the port-pin-lock and that
should...

[WHIRRR the turbine starts to turn.]

3. When she can't shoot anyone in "War Stories." I feel the same way about her that Mal does when he finds out that she froze up and couldn't shoot someone.

Oh, and I love that teddy bear on her overalls so much!!

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
That first scene makes me cry every single time I watch it. He's such a great dad in that scene.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Mal! I love him!

1. The first episode that aired was "The Train Job" and I was won over by his dichotomy: he's willing to kick Niska's henchman into the ship's engine, and give back the medicine because it's the right thing to do.

BOURNE: You were truthful back in town. These are tough times. Hard to find yourself work. A man can get a job, he might not look too close at what that job is. But a man learns all the details of a situation like ours, well then he has a choice.

MAL: I don't believe he does.

2. I love Captain Mal, and he's totally in Captain (and dad) mode in "Safe". He's concerned about Book and of course, there's this kick-ass moment:

PATRON: The girl is a witch

MAL: Yeah. But she's our witch.(cocks his gun) So cut her the hell down.

And I also love his strong loyalty to his crew:

SIMON: You... you came for us.

MAL: You're on my crew.

SIMON: Right. I just, I guess I didn't..you don't even like me.

MAL: You're on my crew. Why we still talking about this? Chow's in ten. No need to dress.

3. One of my favourite episodes is "Out of Gas", and one of the many reasons is because it's basically on ode to Mal's love for Serenity.

I love how he's old-fashioned in many ways:

INARA: Mal, this isn't the ancient sea. You don't have to go down with your ship.

MAL: She ain't going down. She ain't going anywhere.

And of course that final moment when he first sees Serenity. That look of love is awesome.

I love Logan!

1. I adore him in Ruskie Business (1:15) because we see so many different aspects to his character:

- his snark when he and Veronica pretend to be engaged
- his velnerability when he breaks down in Veronica's arms, because his hopes that his mother is still alive are ruined
- his obnoxious behaviour when he's drunk at the dance (and of course the earlier scenes give us neat insight into that)

2. I love the complexity of the Logan and Weevil dynamic, which has so many twists and turns along the way. All their scenes are great in "The Girl Next Door", and nicely map out the trajectory their relationship will go on. Interestingly my favourite moments are actually Logan and Clemmons interactions:

CLEMMONS: Mr Echolls. I was wondering if I could have a word.
LOGAN: Anthropomorphic. All yours, big guy.
**
And then this awesome scene (which is really about him being loyal to Weevil):

LOGAN: Man, I tell you Mr Clemmons, I am pissed off!

CLEMMONS: I need for you to use appropriate language in here, Mr Echolls. Now, what's got under your skin?

LOGAN: It's, uh, it's that Weevil kid.

CLEMMONS: He is no longer a student here.

LOGAN: Yeah, I know. But the problem is, he's getting all the credit for sticking Mr Daniels car on the flagpole. And all of the sudden, he's like the biggest badass in… rad dude here at Neptune. I mean, people are gonna be talking about that punking for years.

CLEMMONS: I don't think I understand.

LOGAN: I mean, I want my share of the credit.

CLEMMONS: You're confessing to helping Eli Navarro? You can't just get away with this, young man.

LOGAN: [Expelling his breath in mock contrition] Yeah, I didn't think I could.

Logan pauses then swings first one foot, then the other onto Clemmons desk. He is wearing a pair of black boots with red stars all over them. Clemmons stares at the boots on his desk.

LOGAN: So, what kind of punishment are we talking about?

3. Hmm, it's hard to narrow it down (even though I keep cheating). I guess I'll have to go with his epic love speech in "Look Who's Stalking" (his view really reminds me of Spike):

Logan: I thought our story was epic, you know? You and me.

Veronica: Epic how?

Logan: Spanning years, and continents. Lives ruined and blood shed. Epic. But summer's almost here, and we won't see each other at all. And then you'll leave town, and then... it's over.

Veronica: Logan...

Logan: I'm sorry about last summer. You know, if I could do it over...

Veronica: Come on. Ruined lives? Bloodshed? You really think a relationship should be that hard?

Logan: No one writes songs about the ones that come easy.
**
And what makes me really love him is how he's able to mess everything up:

Logan: Veronica, last night was kind of a blur...

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
heee! I figured. And no need to slink away. (Isn't slink a great word?)

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, you know my deep love for Xander! I thought this would be hard to narrow down, but I came up with three immediately (although there's lots of other moments too):

1. In "Into the Woods" his declaration of love for Anya always makes me cry:

XANDER: I've gotta say something... 'Cause ... I don't think I've made it clear. I'm in love with you. Powerfully, painfully in love. The things you do ... the way you think ... the way you move ... I get excited every time I'm about to see you. You make me feel like I've never felt before in my life. Like a man. I just thought you might wanna know.

2. I think you already know this but I love his inspirational speech to Buffy in "The Freshman":

Xander: Buffy, I've gone through some fairly dark times in my life, faced some scary things, among them the kitchen at 'The Fabulous Ladies Night Club.' Let me tell you something, when it's dark and I'm all alone and I'm scared or freaked out or whatever, I always think, 'What would Buffy do?' You're my hero. Ok, sometimes when it's dark and I'm all alone I think, 'What is Buffy wearing?'

3. So for my final moment, I was all decided (the "I like the quiet" line in "The Zeppo") until I realized that there's a much bigger Xander-saves-the-world-moment that I love so much, and always makes me cry;

WILLOW: You can't stop this.
XANDER: Yeah, I get that. It's just, where else am I gonna go? You've been my best friend my whole life. World gonna end ... where else would I want to be?
WILLOW: (scornfully) Is this the master plan? You're going to stop me by telling me you love me?
XANDER: Well, I was going to walk you off a cliff and hand you an anvil, but ... it seemed kinda cartoony.
WILLOW: Still making jokes.
XANDER: I'm not joking. I know you're in pain. I can't imagine the pain you're in. And I know you're about to do something apocalyptically evil and stupid, and hey. (spreading out his arms) I still want to hang. You're Willow.
WILLOW: Don't call me that.
XANDER: First day of kindergarten. You cried because you broke the yellow crayon, and you were too afraid to tell anyone. You've come pretty far, ending the world, not a terrific notion. But the thing is? Yeah. I love you. I loved crayon-breaky Willow and I love ... scary veiny Willow. So if I'm going out, it's here. If you wanna kill the world? Well, then start with me. I've earned that.
WILLOW: You think I won't?
XANDER: It doesn't matter. I'll still love you.

Of course these are all mostly sad moments, and Xander's a very funny guy so I thought I'd cheat (which I've basically done in all my answers) and include a couple of my favourite funny moments.

In "Bad Eggs" when they discover that Xander boiled his egg:

Giles: Technically that would be cheating, yes?

Xander: No! It's like a short cut. You know, when you run a race?

Buffy: That would also be cheating.

Willow: You should be ashamed.

Giles: I suppose there is a sort of... Machiavellian ingenuity to your transgression.

Xander: I resent that! Or possibly thank you.

In "Family" when they're researching Glory, and have no clue:

XANDER: (melodramatically) The answer is somewhere here. It's right in front of us and we're too blind to see it!

And since I just watched "The Puppet Show":

- Xander with Sid saying "red rum! red rum!"
- the Scoobies doing the scene from Oedipus

er, stopping now!!

I love Buffy so much, and there's so many awesome moments to choose from. I'm just going with whatever I think of right now:

1. In Becoming Part Two when she "comes out" to her mom, it's such a wonderfully intense scene:

Buffy: No, it doesn't stop! It *never* stops! Do you think I chose to be like this? Do you have any idea how lonely it is, how dangerous? I would *love* to be upstairs watching TV or gossiping about boys or... God, even studying! But I have to save the world... again.

And it's such an empowering moment when she grabs the sword (see icon) in response to this:

Angelus: Now that's everything, huh? No weapons... No friends... No hope.

Buffy closes her eyes and steels herself for whatever's coming.

Angelus: Take all that away... and what's left?

He draws the sword back and thrusts it directly at her face. She swings up with both arms and catches the blade between the palms of her hands. She opens her eyes and meets his.

Buffy: Me.

See, when she has to kill Angel it's very painful - and I always cry - but I love the power of her clasping the sword and declaring "me" in response to Angelus' questions. That affirmation that she just needs herself, no one else.

2. Showtime is one of my favourite episodes because of this moment:

Buffy: That's all they've been doing for days. Waiting to be picked off. Having nightmares about monsters that can't be killed. But I don't believe in that. I always find a way. I'm the thing that monsters have nightmares about. And right now, you and me are gonna show 'em why. It's time. Welcome to Thunderdome.

I love the concept that monsters have nightmares about Buffy!

3. Okay, so I also wanted a funny Buffy moment. I like Life Serial a lot because its a funny take on some serious issues. I'm particularly entertained by drunk Buffy:

BUFFY: What's wrong?! You were gonna help me! You, you were gonna beat heads and, and, and fix my life! But you're completely lame! Tonight sucks! And, and look at me! Look at, look at stupid Buffy! Too dumb for college, and, and, and freak Buffy, too strong for construction work. And, and my job at the magic shop? I was bored to tears even *before* the hour that wouldn't end! And the only person I can even stand to be around is a ... neutered vampire who cheats at kitten poker.

SPIKE: So, you saw the cheating, did you.

BUFFY: Also? I think you're drunk.

It entertains me to no end that she calls Spike "lame" and tells him he's drunk!

Now that I'm thinking about it there's so many other moments I should have chosen (hee chosen), but I think these are pretty representative of what I like about Buffy: her fierce independence, her iconic heroism and her dorkiness. Oh damn, I also adore her immense capacity for love, her sense of rightness and struggle to be a good person, and probably other characteristics I'm forgetting.

Oh Logan! I did answer the Logan one above but there is a HUGE spoiler for season two in it. So I thought I'd give you my favourite season one Logan moments:

1. I adore him in Ruskie Business (1:15) because we see so many different aspects to his character:

- his snark when he and Veronica pretend to be engaged
- his vulnerability when he breaks down in Veronica's arms, because his hopes that his mother is still alive are ruined

3. In "Weapons of Class Destruction" I love that he doesn't keep Veronica's secret about the file on Duncan, but tells Veronica about it. And I adore that he immediately goes to Veronica's rescue and punches out Ben. And then is all protective afterwards, but listens to Veronica and lets her do her thing.

Oh, and there's the small matter of that kiss!! His expression afterwards is the perfect mixture disbelief and wonder.

hee! I was just posting a season two free answer for you! I'm glad you like it!

I'm also inordinately happy with this too. That Weevil/Logan moment is superb - I love that Logan has these layers and comes at you with something completely unexpected.
And now I will seriously, seriously stop bombaring your LJ ::looks really sheepish::
Excellent answers though. You've got me all a-glow about my favourite characters. Thank you! ::hugs::

I love that Logan has these layers and comes at you with something completely unexpected. Yes! I love my characters complex, layered and flawed. *g*

I'm pleased you liked the answers! This is the ideal kind of meme for me because there's nothing I like more than talking about my favourite characters.

Oh, and bombard away! *hugs*

Oh, that part in War Stories was so good! She's so...innocent. Except not 'cause you know, Out of Gas. I loved how she was about her frilly dress--she looked like Bo Peep--except I thought it was the ugliest dress ever. I like her lights and flowers around her door.

Oh, this is such a fun meme!! Thank you for reminding me of some marvelous Giles moments. I'd totally forgotten the third one, but I think I jumped off the couch, punched the air and yelled "Yes!" much to my SO's amusement.

And yeah, he is too-too sexy in Band Candy. I'm shallow too. :)
