It's almost like this metaphor for womanhood, isn't it? (btvs 7:12)

We actually celebrated International Women's Day at my work today (usually it's just another day). All the women were given cards with pears on them (I guess that pears symbolize womanhood?). We got to leave work for an hour, have warm beverages and PIE (I totally thought of [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 when I had the pecan pie).

The first part was all very proper as we sipped our hot chocolate, ate pie and chatted - I noted that we were having the kind of celebration that L.M. Montgomery (aka author of Anne of Green Gables) would have participated in. Sadly, that comment only entertained me. However it did spark life into the group and we talked about everything from our breasts, online dating, the anti-abortion law in South Dakota, the age of consent laws in Canada, our first experiences in feminist groups and horrible IDW dances we've attended. It was actually a very fun time, and it felt like an appropriate way to mark IWD.

I haven't seen any of my tv shows since Monday because all I've been doing is working (stressful) and sleeping (because I'm still feeling ucky). But I do have tv news!

1. Season 3 of BSG won't air until October 2006. WHAT?! We'll have to wait ...*counts*...SEVEN months for the new season. Seven?! Seven months?!! Recounts. Damn, it's still seven months. You just know there's going to be a BIG cliffhanger and then the wait will be excruciating. Also, this doesn't seem like an effective way to retain viewers; peeople don't like to wait.

2. This is the last season of Charmed. I feel weirdly sad about the show ending, despite being amazed that such a crappy show has been on the air so long. Of course I'll inexplicably continue to watch it to the very end.

3. The Amazing Race and How I Met Your Mother both renewed for next season. Here's hoping that next year's The Amazing Race will NOT be the Family Edition. I adore How I Met Your Mother so I'm very happy about this. Also, yay for more Alyson Hannigan on tv!!

4. Speaking of How I Met Your Mother Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof will BOTH guest star on the season finale of the show. Alyson Hannigan, Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof all on the same show, this may top the Alyson Hannigan and Charisma Carpenter reunion on Veronica Mars!

5. James Marsters' next guest starring appearance on Smallville will be Thursday, March 30th at 8pm on the WB. That's also the night when the next new episode of Supernatural airs at its new time at 9pm on Thursday.

In honour of IDW, I leave you with this tidbit I learned from my beloved grandma who passed away in October: celery tastes amazing when it has been soaking in water. She also always used to say "let's play it by ear" which can be very useful to remember.

Oh, I loved hearing a little bit about your grandma. "Let's play it by ear" is very useful indeed.

Yay for PIE! I don't think I've ever had anything in particular happen on International Women's Day, though of course I've participated in things and gone to events for Women's History Month. Nice that your office observed the day. Hmmm, pear. For some reason it's reminding me of the Kids in the Hall skit: "I had the pear dream again."

I'm glad you enjoyed hearing about my grandma. :) After I wrote that I wished I had said other stuff about how cool she was, but I think it's still hard to talk about her.

I was really involved in my university's Women's Centre so we would always do something for IWD (normally going to the march). I really enjoyed the pie and hot chocolate; low key is good. Pie definitely makes the day much better!

Kids in the Hall!! I love them, but can't remember the "pear dream" (silly bad memory - is it one of the segments with the cops?). One of my favourite sketches is when Scott Thompson's a businessman who discovers he's been kidnapped (but he really wasn't) and then has to get the money together for his ransom.

It's funny, I was also involved at the women's center at my college (and right now I'm remembering fondly the little house that we worked in), but I can't remember the specific day-ness of IWD. Just talks and roundtables and other kinds of events for the month of March.

The pear dream went something like a surrealist type film -- cue Scott Thompson cutting into and then lustily eating a juicy pear. Then cut to someone else sitting up in bed with a gasp. "What's the matter?" the other person in the bed says. "I had the pear dream again." The two actors gasping at the dream and asking the question varied each time they did the sketch, and I think the conversation usually ended with things like "I fear we are doomed." Heeee!

Our women's centre was also in a house! That's awesome that you did events throughout March, I suspect we weren't as organized.

I do recall that sketch now! So funny, and yay for it being a surrealist type film (I loved those kinds of sketches). "I fear we are doomed" makes me laugh and laugh. Episodes still play on the comedy network here and I should re-watch because I've forgotten so much of it now.

I know my exact reaction to Friday's episode of BSG already, "Is it October yet?" Although this second season has been problematic, I'm still going to miss it - it's still my favourite current series.

Is there much I need to know about "How I Met Your Mother"? Because I'm tempted to just download the season finale - and I haven't seen any other eps!

I know my exact reaction to Friday's episode of BSG already,"Is it October yet?" I know! It's going to be a very long wait. (I seriously counted out the months twice, in horror at how long the break between seasons will be!)

I'm sure that you'd be okay just downloading the finale of "How I Met Your Mother." I do know that Alexis Denisof is supposed to be in at least one more episode (I don't know the air date yet), so he has a recurring role of some kind. If you read any sort of show summary, that's probably all you need to know. I really enjoy the show because the cast is talented (Neil Patrick Harris steals almost every scene he's in), and the writing is consistently good.

It sucks that IWD was celebrated amidst the US trying to erode women's rights some more. Does Shrub and his wing have nothing else to attend to?

Your grandmother sounds like a smart lady.

And yea to the HIMYM reunion. Gee, with Alexis out of work it sure pays to have a wife who can get him a job. *g*

The attempts to erode women's rights are very distressing. I have been encouraging to see so many people talking about it in a concerned way.

I also think my grandma was a smart lady, but I am really biased!! I'm missing her a lot right now, so it's been nice to think about her.

I'd been worried about Alexis (and of course wanting to see him on tv again!), so it's great that Alyson is getting him work on her show. I'm so excited about the HIMYM reunion!!
