Character Meme

I got this from [livejournal.com profile] karabair, [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue, [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 and [livejournal.com profile] molly_may, and have to do it because I cannot resist something that lets me talk about my love for the characters on my shows:

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I will tell you my top 3 moments or scenes of them.

I'll do any of my fandoms or shows that I watch: BtVS, AtS, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, Scrubs, 24, etc etc (ie. any show you know I watch).

Giles!

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
1. In Innocence:
Buffy: You must be so disappointed in me.

Giles: No. No, no, I'm not.

Buffy: But this is all my fault.

Giles: No. I don't believe it is. Do you want me to wag my finger at
you and tell you that you acted rashly? You did. A-and I can. I know
that you loved him. And... he... has proven more than once that he loved
you. You couldn't have known what would happen. The coming months a-are
gonna, are gonna be hard... I, I suspect on all of us, but... if it's
guilt you're looking for, Buffy, I'm, I'm not your man. All you will get
from me is, is my support. And my respect.

2. In Band Candy when he's under the spell: Because I'm shallow and he's so sexy. It's also really fun to see not in the his traditional role.

3. When he returns in "Two to Go":

WILLOW: And there's no one in the world with the power to stop me now.

Suddenly a huge blast of green magic energy hits Willow from the side. She goes flying a huge distance across the room, lands on the floor and slides some more.

She comes to a stop and lifts her head. Her nose is bleeding. She looks surprised, looks up in the direction the magic came from.

Reveal Giles standing in the doorway, wearing a long black coat and no glasses.

GILES: I'd like to test that theory.

I'm being boring and giving everyone Wesley.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not boring - I love Wesley! I love his whole season 3 and 4 arc, but I'll pick some moments:

1. In Loyalty when he confronts Holtz:
Holtz: "You don't believe me."

Wes: "Hmm. Not sure really. Could be the low scary voice that's giving me trouble."

Holtz: "It's time to make a decision, Mr. Wyndham-Pryce. My army is strong and will only increase in number. Fight against us - and this war will become a bloodbath."

Wes: "This isn't war. It's revenge."

2. Also in Loyalty, the whole discussion with the Hamburger and then this moment:

Wes: "Life. Life is funny. Listening to stupid people talking to hamburgers is funny. Worrying about things that will never... - It's all so incredibly funny and - and beautiful."

3. My heart breaks for Wes in A Hole in the World and Shells. From Shells:

ANGEL
You're about as low as it gets, Knox, but you're a part of humanity.
That isn't always pretty, but it's a hell of a lot better than what
came before. And if it comes down to a choice between you and him,
then yes, I would fight for his life, just like any other human's.
Because that's what people do. That's what makes us—

A gunshot echoes in the room. Knox looks down at his chest to see
he's bleeding from a gunshot wound to the heart. He collapses. Wes is
holding the smoking gun.

ANGEL
(turns to Wes, shakes his head)
Were you even listening?

And I love the exchange with Illyria at the end:

ILLYRIA
We cling to what is gone. Is there anything in this life but grief?

WESLEY
There's love. There's hope...for some. There's hope that you'll find
something worthy... that your life will lead you to some joy... that
after everything... you can still be surprised.
ILLYRIA
Is that enough?
(looks at Wes)
Is that enough to live on?

I also really love dorky, and clumsy Wesley, so special mentions to:

- The famous dancing scene
- In Spin the Bottle: Aah! All right. Nobody scream. Or touch my arms.

I totally cheated and did way more than 3 scenes. hee

oh, i have to know what your top 3 jack (24) moments are.

also, if you're up for it, your top 3 lorelei moments would be cool.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that Jack! Disclaimer: I actually haven't seen season 1 (I know, bad fan) and I have a fuzzy memory for most of season 2 & 3.

1. In season two, Jack is tortured and briefly killed. And the next hour after he's revived, he's up and managing to escape. He then continues on in his world-saving mission. Gotta love that even death can't stop Jack!

2. I thought they would all be over-the-top cracktastic ones, but my heart always breaks for Jack at the end of season 4 when he has to fake his own death:

Palmer: I’m glad. This is probably the last time we’ll ever speak. Jack, you do understand when you hang up, for all intents and purposes, Jack Bauer’s dead.

Jack: I understand that, sir. Mr. President, it’s been an honor.

Palmer: Same for me, my friend.

Jack hangs up the call. As the sun rises, Jack puts on a pair of sunglasses and walks along the railroad tracks.

3. This season has the quintessential Jack moment during "2pm-3pm":
He's gone undercover and is posing as a terrorist at the mall when they're trying to release the Sentox. He manages to thwart terrorists, disobey direct Presidential orders and - as an added bonus - he's adorable when saving a little girl!

There's a lot of cracktastic moments this season that I love: he shoots down a helicopter, every time Jack goes rogue (which is like every 5 minutes every season), he once again narrowly escapes death by bomb and - miraculously - electrocution and fire, when Jack emerged from the flames and smoke CARRYING Henderson, and when he hijacks a plane.

Lorelei!! I love Lorelei!

1. The episode "Dear Emily and Richard" in season 3, that has all the flashbacks to when Lorelei was first pregnant with Rory and left home. It does a wonderful job of exploring the complexities in her relationship with her mom (and her dad). I love that she brings her mom the dvd player and a bunch of dvds at the end.

2. This is a really dorky one: In "Always a Godmother, Never a God" (really early this season), Lorelei is going through her videotapes.

LORELEI: Oh, no, no, whoa, there, mister. Ha. Those are the keepers. These are the ones I'm tossing.

LUKE: There's two videotapes in there.

I can relate to her ridiculous amount of videotapes which is why I love that. It's also so incredibly sad at the end with she's watching the Rosie O'Donnell movie without Rory and says:

It's not the same.

3. In season 4, "The Loreleis' First Day at Yale", after helping Rory move in, she comes back when Rory needs her, and helps Rory meet people by throwing an impromtu party with lots and lots of food. It results in Rory meeting a bunch of people and ends with:

Lorelei walks into the empty house. She stands in the living room and looks around.

She's such a consistently fun and entertaining character that it was hard to pick three. I went for ones that summed up various things I liked about her: her complex attitude towards and relationship with her parents, her quirkiness and love of pop culture, and being an overall amazing mom to Rory.

I adore Starbuck, I have such a crush on her!

1. In the miniseries when she's smoking a cigar, playing cards, being belligerent to Tigh, gets into an argument with him and punches him in the face. Oh yeah, that's my girl.

2. In "Kobol's Last Gleaming Part 1" when she disobeys Adama and follows her faith by going on the mission for the Arrow of Apollo:

Apollo: What are you doing, Kara?
The raider jumps away
Apollo: Galactica/Apollo, she just jumped away. Repeat, Starbuck and the raider just jumped away.

I also love how she's heroically lit when she returns in "Home Part 1", and this:

Starbuck enters the loading bay and is embraced by Apollo. He kisses her.

Starbuck: Good to see you too, Captain.

(Notice how I cheated and made about 3 moments into one item? hee)

3. In "Valley of Darkness", the entire scene when she and Helo are in her apartment listening to the music, especially this:

Starbuck: After they attacked, I never... I never pined over any of my old crap. Never missed it. Stupid view of the parking lot. Broken toilet in the bathroom. You know, everyone I know... is fighting to get back what they had. And I'm fighting 'cause I don't know how to do anything else.

Oh, I'm cheating and adding another moment. In "Home Part 1", I love her and Apollo's interaction:

Apollo: Hmm. It must have been hard, being back on caprica. Being home. Probably saw some tough things back there. Anyway, tomorrow this whole thing is gonna end, one way or another. We find the tomb or we don't. We find a way to earth or we don't. I just want you to know, kara, that I'm your friend. I love you. If there's anything you wanna talk about, anything you wanna get off your chest, then I'm here for you. Anyway... whenever you wanna talk, just let me know.

Starbuck: What was that middle part again?

Apollo:Hmm? What do you mean?

Starbuck: Did you say you love me?

Apollo:[Laughs] Well, um--

Starbuck: Lee Adama loves me.

Apollo:No, all I meant was--

Starbuck: no, seriously, very sweet. You love me.

Apollo:[Laughs nervously]

Starbuck: No, you love me. You can't take it back. There's no take-backs.

Apollo:You're dreaming it, Kara.

Starbuck: You love me.

Apollo:You're dreaming it.

Starbuck: You love me.

Apollo:Dreamer.

Starbuck: Mm-hmm. Okay.

I adore Oz so much! And the funny thing is that the only icon I have with Oz in it, is the exact same one that you used!!

1. When Oz wins over Willow in "Innocence", he wins me over too:
Oz: Sometimes when I'm sitting in class... You know, I'm not thinking
about class, 'cause that would never happen. I think about kissing you.
And it's like everything stops. It's like, it's like freeze frame.
Willow kissage.

Oz: Oh, I'm not gonna kiss you.

Willow: What? But freeze frame!

Oz: Well, to the casual observer, it would appear that you're trying to
make your friend Xander jealous or even the score or something. And
that's on the empty side. See, in my fantasy when I'm kissing *you*, you're kissing *me*. It's okay. I can wait.

2. When Oz gives Willow another chance in "Amends":
Oz: This is what I do know: I miss you. Like, every
second. Almost like I lost an arm, or worse, a torso. So, I think I'd be
willing to... give it a shot.

And I love his reaction to the sex proposition, with the standing and sitting and then:

Oz: No, I have, but this is different. I mean, you look great.
You know, and, and you got the Barry working for you, and, and it's
all... good. But when it happens... I want it to be because we both need
it to for the same reason. You don't have to prove anything to me.

Willow: I just wanted you to know.

Oz: I know. I get the message.

3. I love Oz's sense of humour, so I love moments like this one in "The Zeppo":

Xander: But you need a thing, one thing nobody else has. What do I have?

Oz: An exciting new obsession. Which I feel makes you very special.

And this one in "Living Conditions":

Buffy: You're right. Ooh! She's even affecting my work, now. She's the Titanic. She's a crawling black cancer. (She brings her foot up, around and down onto a bench, breaking it in two.) She's... other really bad things.

Oz: On the plus side you've killed the bench, which was looking shifty.

Kaylee!

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I adore Kaylee!!

1. I have intense love for her in "Shindig" and that frilly dress. I can totally relate to her love for big pouffy dresses. I think it's left over from Anne's desire for "puffy sleeves" in AoGG.

I just want to squish her when she's being herself with all those snooty people at the ball:

KAYLEE
(re dancers)
Aren't they something? Like butterflies or little pieces of wrapping paper, blowing around...

And then it's so awesome when she's fitting in:
KAYLEE
By the way, the eighty-ten's the same machine. They changed the plating, hoped no one'd notice!

2. When Mal first meets Kaylee in the "Out of Gas" flashback. I adore that she was noticing the engine's problem while having sex:

KAYLEE: Sure it is. Grav boot ain't your trouble. I seen the trouble plain as day when I's down there on my back. Your reg couple's bad.

BESTER: The... the what?

KAYLEE: Reg couple. Right here. See?

BESTER: No.

KAYLEE: This. I'm pointin' right at it.

[She rolls her eyes, sighs, reaches in, breaks off a part of the engine.]

BESTER: Hey!

KAYLEE: Here.

[She plunks the part in Bester's hand. She reaches back in, tinkers.

Don't really serve much of a purpose, anyway. Just tends to gum up the works when it gets tacked. Hand me that, will ya? So I figure, why even have it? Better to just plug your g-line straight into the port-pin-lock and that
should...

[WHIRRR the turbine starts to turn.]

3. When she can't shoot anyone in "War Stories." I feel the same way about her that Mal does when he finds out that she froze up and couldn't shoot someone.

Oh, and I love that teddy bear on her overalls so much!!

Mal! I love him!

1. The first episode that aired was "The Train Job" and I was won over by his dichotomy: he's willing to kick Niska's henchman into the ship's engine, and give back the medicine because it's the right thing to do.

BOURNE: You were truthful back in town. These are tough times. Hard to find yourself work. A man can get a job, he might not look too close at what that job is. But a man learns all the details of a situation like ours, well then he has a choice.

MAL: I don't believe he does.

2. I love Captain Mal, and he's totally in Captain (and dad) mode in "Safe". He's concerned about Book and of course, there's this kick-ass moment:

PATRON: The girl is a witch

MAL: Yeah. But she's our witch.(cocks his gun) So cut her the hell down.

And I also love his strong loyalty to his crew:

SIMON: You... you came for us.

MAL: You're on my crew.

SIMON: Right. I just, I guess I didn't..you don't even like me.

MAL: You're on my crew. Why we still talking about this? Chow's in ten. No need to dress.

3. One of my favourite episodes is "Out of Gas", and one of the many reasons is because it's basically on ode to Mal's love for Serenity.

I love how he's old-fashioned in many ways:

INARA: Mal, this isn't the ancient sea. You don't have to go down with your ship.

MAL: She ain't going down. She ain't going anywhere.

And of course that final moment when he first sees Serenity. That look of love is awesome.

I love Logan!

1. I adore him in Ruskie Business (1:15) because we see so many different aspects to his character:

- his snark when he and Veronica pretend to be engaged
- his velnerability when he breaks down in Veronica's arms, because his hopes that his mother is still alive are ruined
- his obnoxious behaviour when he's drunk at the dance (and of course the earlier scenes give us neat insight into that)

2. I love the complexity of the Logan and Weevil dynamic, which has so many twists and turns along the way. All their scenes are great in "The Girl Next Door", and nicely map out the trajectory their relationship will go on. Interestingly my favourite moments are actually Logan and Clemmons interactions:

CLEMMONS: Mr Echolls. I was wondering if I could have a word.
LOGAN: Anthropomorphic. All yours, big guy.
**
And then this awesome scene (which is really about him being loyal to Weevil):

LOGAN: Man, I tell you Mr Clemmons, I am pissed off!

CLEMMONS: I need for you to use appropriate language in here, Mr Echolls. Now, what's got under your skin?

LOGAN: It's, uh, it's that Weevil kid.

CLEMMONS: He is no longer a student here.

LOGAN: Yeah, I know. But the problem is, he's getting all the credit for sticking Mr Daniels car on the flagpole. And all of the sudden, he's like the biggest badass in… rad dude here at Neptune. I mean, people are gonna be talking about that punking for years.

CLEMMONS: I don't think I understand.

LOGAN: I mean, I want my share of the credit.

CLEMMONS: You're confessing to helping Eli Navarro? You can't just get away with this, young man.

LOGAN: [Expelling his breath in mock contrition] Yeah, I didn't think I could.

Logan pauses then swings first one foot, then the other onto Clemmons desk. He is wearing a pair of black boots with red stars all over them. Clemmons stares at the boots on his desk.

LOGAN: So, what kind of punishment are we talking about?

3. Hmm, it's hard to narrow it down (even though I keep cheating). I guess I'll have to go with his epic love speech in "Look Who's Stalking" (his view really reminds me of Spike):

Logan: I thought our story was epic, you know? You and me.

Veronica: Epic how?

Logan: Spanning years, and continents. Lives ruined and blood shed. Epic. But summer's almost here, and we won't see each other at all. And then you'll leave town, and then... it's over.

Veronica: Logan...

Logan: I'm sorry about last summer. You know, if I could do it over...

Veronica: Come on. Ruined lives? Bloodshed? You really think a relationship should be that hard?

Logan: No one writes songs about the ones that come easy.
**
And what makes me really love him is how he's able to mess everything up:

Logan: Veronica, last night was kind of a blur...

Ah, you know my deep love for Xander! I thought this would be hard to narrow down, but I came up with three immediately (although there's lots of other moments too):

1. In "Into the Woods" his declaration of love for Anya always makes me cry:

XANDER: I've gotta say something... 'Cause ... I don't think I've made it clear. I'm in love with you. Powerfully, painfully in love. The things you do ... the way you think ... the way you move ... I get excited every time I'm about to see you. You make me feel like I've never felt before in my life. Like a man. I just thought you might wanna know.

2. I think you already know this but I love his inspirational speech to Buffy in "The Freshman":

Xander: Buffy, I've gone through some fairly dark times in my life, faced some scary things, among them the kitchen at 'The Fabulous Ladies Night Club.' Let me tell you something, when it's dark and I'm all alone and I'm scared or freaked out or whatever, I always think, 'What would Buffy do?' You're my hero. Ok, sometimes when it's dark and I'm all alone I think, 'What is Buffy wearing?'

3. So for my final moment, I was all decided (the "I like the quiet" line in "The Zeppo") until I realized that there's a much bigger Xander-saves-the-world-moment that I love so much, and always makes me cry;

WILLOW: You can't stop this.
XANDER: Yeah, I get that. It's just, where else am I gonna go? You've been my best friend my whole life. World gonna end ... where else would I want to be?
WILLOW: (scornfully) Is this the master plan? You're going to stop me by telling me you love me?
XANDER: Well, I was going to walk you off a cliff and hand you an anvil, but ... it seemed kinda cartoony.
WILLOW: Still making jokes.
XANDER: I'm not joking. I know you're in pain. I can't imagine the pain you're in. And I know you're about to do something apocalyptically evil and stupid, and hey. (spreading out his arms) I still want to hang. You're Willow.
WILLOW: Don't call me that.
XANDER: First day of kindergarten. You cried because you broke the yellow crayon, and you were too afraid to tell anyone. You've come pretty far, ending the world, not a terrific notion. But the thing is? Yeah. I love you. I loved crayon-breaky Willow and I love ... scary veiny Willow. So if I'm going out, it's here. If you wanna kill the world? Well, then start with me. I've earned that.
WILLOW: You think I won't?
XANDER: It doesn't matter. I'll still love you.

Of course these are all mostly sad moments, and Xander's a very funny guy so I thought I'd cheat (which I've basically done in all my answers) and include a couple of my favourite funny moments.

In "Bad Eggs" when they discover that Xander boiled his egg:

Giles: Technically that would be cheating, yes?

Xander: No! It's like a short cut. You know, when you run a race?

Buffy: That would also be cheating.

Willow: You should be ashamed.

Giles: I suppose there is a sort of... Machiavellian ingenuity to your transgression.

Xander: I resent that! Or possibly thank you.

In "Family" when they're researching Glory, and have no clue:

XANDER: (melodramatically) The answer is somewhere here. It's right in front of us and we're too blind to see it!

And since I just watched "The Puppet Show":

- Xander with Sid saying "red rum! red rum!"
- the Scoobies doing the scene from Oedipus

er, stopping now!!

Well, Logan was my first choice ::ahem:: but ok, what about Buffy?

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I love Buffy so much, and there's so many awesome moments to choose from. I'm just going with whatever I think of right now:

1. In Becoming Part Two when she "comes out" to her mom, it's such a wonderfully intense scene:

Buffy: No, it doesn't stop! It *never* stops! Do you think I chose to be like this? Do you have any idea how lonely it is, how dangerous? I would *love* to be upstairs watching TV or gossiping about boys or... God, even studying! But I have to save the world... again.

And it's such an empowering moment when she grabs the sword (see icon) in response to this:

Angelus: Now that's everything, huh? No weapons... No friends... No hope.

Buffy closes her eyes and steels herself for whatever's coming.

Angelus: Take all that away... and what's left?

He draws the sword back and thrusts it directly at her face. She swings up with both arms and catches the blade between the palms of her hands. She opens her eyes and meets his.

Buffy: Me.

See, when she has to kill Angel it's very painful - and I always cry - but I love the power of her clasping the sword and declaring "me" in response to Angelus' questions. That affirmation that she just needs herself, no one else.

2. Showtime is one of my favourite episodes because of this moment:

Buffy: That's all they've been doing for days. Waiting to be picked off. Having nightmares about monsters that can't be killed. But I don't believe in that. I always find a way. I'm the thing that monsters have nightmares about. And right now, you and me are gonna show 'em why. It's time. Welcome to Thunderdome.

I love the concept that monsters have nightmares about Buffy!

3. Okay, so I also wanted a funny Buffy moment. I like Life Serial a lot because its a funny take on some serious issues. I'm particularly entertained by drunk Buffy:

BUFFY: What's wrong?! You were gonna help me! You, you were gonna beat heads and, and, and fix my life! But you're completely lame! Tonight sucks! And, and look at me! Look at, look at stupid Buffy! Too dumb for college, and, and, and freak Buffy, too strong for construction work. And, and my job at the magic shop? I was bored to tears even *before* the hour that wouldn't end! And the only person I can even stand to be around is a ... neutered vampire who cheats at kitten poker.

SPIKE: So, you saw the cheating, did you.

BUFFY: Also? I think you're drunk.

It entertains me to no end that she calls Spike "lame" and tells him he's drunk!

Now that I'm thinking about it there's so many other moments I should have chosen (hee chosen), but I think these are pretty representative of what I like about Buffy: her fierce independence, her iconic heroism and her dorkiness. Oh damn, I also adore her immense capacity for love, her sense of rightness and struggle to be a good person, and probably other characteristics I'm forgetting.

Oh Logan! I did answer the Logan one above but there is a HUGE spoiler for season two in it. So I thought I'd give you my favourite season one Logan moments:

1. I adore him in Ruskie Business (1:15) because we see so many different aspects to his character:

- his snark when he and Veronica pretend to be engaged
- his vulnerability when he breaks down in Veronica's arms, because his hopes that his mother is still alive are ruined

3. In "Weapons of Class Destruction" I love that he doesn't keep Veronica's secret about the file on Duncan, but tells Veronica about it. And I adore that he immediately goes to Veronica's rescue and punches out Ben. And then is all protective afterwards, but listens to Veronica and lets her do her thing.

Oh, and there's the small matter of that kiss!! His expression afterwards is the perfect mixture disbelief and wonder.

Okay, so, um... since you cheated on your answers (out of sheer love for the characters, I recognize), can I cheat and ask another one?? :)
I really wanna hear what your favourite Wash moments are!

since you cheated on your answers (out of sheer love for the characters, I recognize)
So, you saw the cheating, did you. teehee! I crack myself up. Um, anyway here's my Wash answers (I haven't been including the movie in my answers just to keep things under control, and I'm definitely not using it for Wash because I might cry. Again.):

1. In Serenity Part One, the first introduction of Wash, which is so damn funny:

WASH: Everything looks good from here... (beat) Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive.

[It is at this point that we realize he's playing with little plastic dinosaurs. He holds a stegosaurus and a T-rex (or whatever the hell they call 'em these days).

The dinosaurs look out over his dash/console, toward the window.]

WASH (cont'd)
(as steg) We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... This Land.
(as T-rex) I think we should call it... your grave!
(steg) Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
(T-rex) Ha HA! Mine is an evil laugh! Now die!

2. I adore Wash in War Stories because it explores his insecurities about Mal and Zoe's sexual tension (or lack thereof). I love his resolve about rescuing Mal:

JAYNE You really think you can mount a two-man frontal assault on Niska's
skyplex and live?

WASH Technically it's a one-man/one-woman assault. A unisex.
(to Zoe)Grenades?

And:

WASH
There's a certain motto Jayne. A creed among folk like us, you may have heard it: Leave no man behind.

3. This one is also from the pilot, Serenity Part Two, when they're arguing about what to do with Simon & River. Wash demonstrates his heart and calmness in these kinds of situations:

WASH Can we maybe vote on the whole murdering people issue?

It's such a small moment, but it really solidifies my love for him. I just realized I also should have included his overwhelming concern for Zoe in Out of Gas, as well as him popping up from the console with that ridiculous moustache in the flashback!
