"What can I say? I'm the world's best actor." "Second best." (btvs 3:17)

In previous years I've held out hope that my favourite shows and actors would get Emmy nominations. And I've always been disappointed when it seems like being on HBO guarantees a nomination, the same shows get nominated year after year, and mediocre actors like Charlie Sheen and Patricia Arquette get nominated (and win!). So, last year after gazing at the awards and declaring It's like these people don't actually watch television! I decided that (other than the industry prestige and glitzy parties) the Emmys are silly and meaningless, and if I made up my own nominations to celebrate my favourite shows, actors and writers it is way more meaningful. Why more meaningful, you ask? Because I love television!! And I'm sure I watch way more tv than the average Emmy voter.

So, if you want to see who the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences nominated click here. ETA: There are NO spoilers behind the cut. And if you want to know why I nominated something or why I didn't, please ask - I didn't have the energy for lengthy explanations (thus, why no spoilers). Now, onto the real nominations:

The Second Annual Nominations for the Cordelianne Emmys

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Jason Bateman as Michael Bluth, Arrested Development - Fox.
Zach Braff as Dr. John 'J.D.' Dorian, Scrubs - NBC.
Steve Carell as Michael Scott, The Office - NBC.
Kevin Connolly as Eric, Entourage - HBO.
Jason Lee as Earl, My Name is Earl - NBC.

I have no idea how I'll select who'll win out of this super talented bunch.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Jason Dohring as Logan Echolls, Veronica Mars - UPN.
Edward James Olmos as Commander William Adama, Battlestar Galactica - SciFi.
Gregory Smith as Ephram Brown, Everwood - the WB.
Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, 24 - Fox.
Treat Williams as Dr. Andrew Brown, Everwood - the WB.

I'm not 100% sure of the exact category that certain actors should be in (eg. should Jason Dohring be in supporting instead?), but I tried to decide based on if people have their own story arcs and how prominent they are on the show.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Alexis Bledel as Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls - the WB.
Sarah Chalke as Dr. Elliot Reid, Scrubs - NBC.
Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore, Gilmore Girls - the WB.
Reba McEntire as Reba Hart, Reba - the WB.
Jaime Pressly as Joy, My Name is Earl - NBC.

Now you may be surprised to see Gilmore Girls in comedy, but I know that's the category that the show selects when submitting "for your considerations." This is another one where I'm not sure if Jaime Pressly should be in this category but she has such a strong presence on My Name is Earl I decided she should be in the "lead actress" category.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars , Veronica Mars - UPN.
Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan, Bones - Fox.
Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin, Battlestar Galactica - SciFi.
Katee Sackhoff as Lt Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace, Battlestar Galactica - SciFi.
Emily VanCamp as Amy Abbott, Everwood - the WB.

I'm so excited that I had space for Emily Deschanel of Bones (which didn't get any other nominations this year) because it's nice to nominate a few new shows and actors, while also ensuring that shows that ended this year got nominations.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Will Arnett as George "Gob" Bluth II, Arrested Development - Fox.
John C. McGinley as Dr. Perry Cox, Scrubs - NBC.
Scott Patterson as Luke Danes, Gilmore Girls - the WB.
Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold, Entourage - HBO.
Ethan Suplee as Randy, My Name is Earl - NBC.

This was a tough category, there's definitely a number of actors (ie. Donald Faison of Scrubs) who I wanted to include but ran out of space.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Tom Amandes as Dr. Harold Abbott Jr., Everwood - the WB.
James Callis as Dr. Gaius Baltar, Battlestar Galactica - SciFi.
Francis Capra as Eli "Weevil" Navarro, Veronica Mars - UPN.
Gregory Itzin as Charles Logan, 24 - Fox.
Chris Pratt as Harold Brighton "Bright" Abbott III, Everwood - the WB.

I'm so excited that there was room for both the Abbott men of Everwood!! And I'll give you a tip (should you be planning on betting), Tom Amandes is the front runner in the category.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES

Keiko Agena as Lane Kim, Gilmore Girls - the WB.
Kelly Bishop as Emily Gilmore, Gilmore Girls - the WB.
Melissa Peterman as Barbra Jean Hart, Reba - the WB.
Judy Reyes as Nurse Carla Espinosa, Scrubs - NBC.
Jessica Walter as Lucille Bluth, Arrested Development - Fox.

Another hard one! Although I have much love for Melissa Peterman's Barbra Jean ....

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Sarah Drew as Hannah, Everwood - the WB.
Merrilyn Gann as Rose Abbott, Everwood - the WB.
Yunjin Kim as Sun Kwon, Lost - ABC.
Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang, Grey's Anatomy - ABC.
Jean Smart as Martha Logan, 24 - Fox.

You'll note that Everwood is getting a lot of nominations (which it should), and that's partly because it's the show's last year, and partly because it's totally award-worthy!! By the way, that's Everwood's Sarah Drew as Hannah in my icon.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

Arrested Development - Fox.
Gilmore Girls - the WB.
The Office - NBC.
Reba - the WB.
Scrubs - NBC.

Please know that My Name is Earl, Entourage, How I Met Your Mother and Everybody Hates Chris should really all be nominated as well. I decided to nominate two shows which ended this year as this is their last chance (Arrested Development and Reba).

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

24 - Fox.
Battlestar Galactica - SciFi.
Everwood - WB
Grey's Anatomy - ABC.
Veronica Mars - UPN.

There's a couple new shows that started this year that I think are good, but not worthy of being nominated yet. Here's hoping for kick ass second seasons!!

I'm sure you're wondering how the winners will be determined. I will be making that decision and announcing it on (or close to) Emmy night. I will likely do a poll to determine the people's choice around that date, but I will ultimately have to pick one from my favourites in each category (which will be a challenge!!).

I'd wanted to do more categories (ie. writing and directing) but am exhausted from all my preparations for visiting [livejournal.com profile] savoytruffle (I leave on Monday!!! eeeeee!!!) and for Writercon!!! The excitement levels are VERY HIGH here!!! I'm pretty much ready although there's a couple of last minute things I need to do tomorrow and Monday (eg. I still need to get American money. I remembered to set aside my Veronica Mars dvds but not get cash. *headdesk*).

*squishes you all* *collapses*

I remembered to set aside my Veronica Mars dvds but not get cash. *headdesk* Hey, you have your priorities straight! That's what bank cards are for. *waves airily, in the manner of one who has forgotten cash on many occasions, and in fact even arrived in a country being unsure what currency is in local use*

That is a most amazing list, and almost makes me sorry that I don't watch TV these days! *g*

The other day, EntreNous poked me to think about other fandoms/shows out there and whether I would get involved in any - then she's just posted a semi-inquiry into the Supernatural fandom, which is one I was wondering about and have had a few tantalizing glimpses of. I note it doesn't appear in your list, and I'm curious: is it not one you watch, is it too early for you to nom, or is it just not as good as those you've drawn the noms from?

Yay for WriterCon! Yay for roadtrips! Yay for meeting savoytruffle in person!! Have a really really amazing time. *squishes back* *fans* *provides caffeine*

I don't watch the Emmys. I don't watch any award shows. I dropped by the official list you linked, and was completely astounded to discover there is an "Outstanding Hairstyling" award. More, that there's one each for "series" as opposed to "miniseries, movie or special."

Also, I'm kind of intrigued to see that Supernatural, Stargate Atlantis and 24 all got nommed in the "Outstanding Music Composition" category. Now I have to watch them, just to check out the music! :)

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-07-16 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a crazy amount of different types of nominations aren't there?! I hadn't realized until recently that there's an award for main title design.

Now I have to watch them, just to check out the music! :)
hee! Of course, that doesn't mean they're the best seeing how the other awards seem pretty random. I suspect that SPN does a good job at using music to set a scary mood, so the music is likely pretty good (I can't recall off hand).

heeee! That's so adorable! I really like Stockard Channing, and she's actually really good in Out of Practice, the show she's nominated for (unfortunately the show was cancelled). She's really good in a fun movie The First Wives Club.

[identity profile] electricalgwen.livejournal.com 2006-07-16 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw The First Wives Club some years back and really enjoyed it, but I couldn't have told you who was in it (obviously, lol).

I've just been reading [livejournal.com profile] moonythestrals Intro to SPN (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=moonythestrals&keyword=My+Comics&filter=all) comics and laughing like mad. Fun.

*waves airily, in the manner of one who has forgotten cash on many occasions, and in fact even arrived in a country being unsure what currency is in local use*
heeeeee! I'm not too worried about the cash situation. I should have time to exchange some tomorrow and I have a few American dollars floating around (as well as debit cards). And I'm glad you think I have my priorities straight!

Supernatural is a show that I watch. I actually really enjoy it, and am often surprised by how good it is. However, I'd say it's not as good as the other shows that I nominated. It definitely got better as the season progressed. There's a lot to love about the show but it hasn't drawn me in like Veronica Mars and Battlestar Galactica. It has very pretty boys, neat family relationships, and can be scary (I am a wimp though). It's very much a guy show, so the brothers are interesting characters but the female characters (all guest stars) aren't that interesting. I've discovered that re-watching Supernatural isn't as fun as re-watching BtVS, AtS, Veronica Mars or Battlestar Galactica. If I was recommending a new fandom, I'd suggest VM or BSG, although SPN does have some really amazing fanfic writers.

Thanks for your yays and good wishes!!!! Yay!! I leave tomorrow, so am running around getting ready! *enjoys the breeze and caffeine* *hugs*

You watch too darn much TV. That's one of the things I like about you.

[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com 2006-07-16 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
hee! Yay! *g* It's scary to consider that there's more shows that I watch which I didn't nominate!

fun!

Hi there! It's me, [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast, in my cunning disguise.

I'm friending you with both journals. But, uh, this one first, 'cause it's the one that's logged in right now.

::friending::

You were an awesome roommate. Yay! And right about now you're probably heading for the airport in Atlanta, so I'll just wish you a safe and smooth trip home!

You were also an awesome roommate!! We had such great people in our room!! I had a smooth but long trip home, so arrived home completely exhausted last night. But I'm home!

Now I just need to find time to read all the post-Writercon posts and write my own!!

Welcome home!

I'm still in the catching-up-on-LJ stage, while thinking over what all I want to say about Writercon (besides "squeee! awesome!").
