I've slept, finished Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, run errands, and am ready to continue with my response to the Emmy nominations.

Frequently my favourite characters in shows are the supporting characters, so I'll be packing my wish list of nominations with many of my favourite actors on television.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY

Actually Nominated

Peter Boyle, "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS)
Brad Garrett, "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS)
Sean Hayes, "Will & Grace" (NBC)
Jeremy Piven, "Entourage" (HBO)
Jeffrey Tambor, "Arrested Development" (FOX)

Should Have Been Nominated

Sean Gunn, "Gilmore Girls" (WB)
John C. McGinley, "Scrubs" (NBC)
Scott Patterson, "Gilmore Girls" (WB)
Jeremy Piven, "Entourage" (HBO)
Jeffrey Tambor, "Arrested Development" (FOX)

It's so awesome that Scrubs got some nominations but I still wish they'd nominate John C. McGinley - he is so marvelous as Dr. Co, there's never a dull moment when he's on the screen.

I adore Jeffrey Tambor and Jeremy Piven, so I'm delighted that they're nominated. I'd love to nominate the entire cast of Arrested Development and Entourage but want to recognize the severely under-appreciated cast of Gilmore Girls. Scott Patterson can do a Gilmore Girls style rant while leaving me in no doubt of his utter lack of girlyness. Sean Gunn should get nominated simply for his whole night terrors speech and the following pillow/nakedness scene.

When I was thinking about this category I wished that I'd nominated Entourage in Outstanding Comedy Series but I'm not sure which show I'd chose to remove.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY

Actually Nominated

Conchata Ferrell, "Two and a Half Men" (CBS)
Megan Mullally, "Will & Grace" (NBC)
Doris Roberts, "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS)
Holland Taylor, "Two and a Half Men" (CBS)
Jessica Walter, "Arrested Development" (FOX)

Should Have Been Nominated

Kelly Bishop, "Gilmore Girls" (WB)
Alexis Bledel, "Gilmore Girls" (WB)
Melissa Peterman, "Reba" (WB)
Judy Reyes, "Scrubs" (NBC)
Jessica Walter, "Arrested Development" (FOX)

I'm still getting carried away with my love of Gilmore Girls particularly with the fabulousness of Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Emily (Kelly Bishop). I had to restrain myself from nominating Paris and Lane so I could nominate actresses from other shows.

I love the entire cast of Scrubs and I think that Judy Reyes' Carla brings an understated humour to every episode.

Melissa Peterman is fabulous as the wacky Barbara Jean. She's also managed to make Barbara Jean a believable, likable and sympathetic character, and not just a one-dimensional buffoon.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA

Actually Nominated

Alan Alda, "The West Wing" (NBC)
Naveen Andrews, "Lost" (ABC)
Terry O'Quinn, "Lost" (ABC)
Oliver Platt, "Huff" (Showtime)
William Shatner, "Boston Legal" (ABC)

Should Have Been Nominated

Tom Amandes, "Everwood" (WB)
Naveen Andrews, "Lost" (ABC)
Jason Dohring, "Veronica Mars (UPN)
Terry O'Quinn, "Lost" (ABC)
Chris Pratt, "Everwood" (WB)
Michael Welch, "Joan of Arcadia" (CBS)

This is one of my favourite categories and I sometimes wish that I really could nominate people, but at the same time it would be so hard to decide because I love so many of the actors/characters that qualify as supporting. That's why I've nominated 6 actors (thankfully I'm not actually restricted by 5 nominations like the Emmys).

If Tom Amandes were on a show on a different network (meaning not the WB) he would get nominated every year because he always turns in astoundingly moving, funny, vulnerable, and complex performances. He shone this season when he reacted to Rose's cancer, particularly his prayer in the washroom.

I also adore Chris Pratt who has been able to transform a two-dimensional jock character into a guy I care about (even when he does stupid things).

Naveen Andrews and Terry O'Quinn have two of the most interesting characters on Lost, but they also completely embody those roles.

In an attempt to restrain myself, I only nominated one guy from Joan of Arcadia - Luke (Michael Welch). Good at drama, good at comedy, and you've got to love an actor who's actually playing his age (and doing a really impressive job at it).

So my nomination of Jason Dohring may be a result of my crush, but I don't think I'd have the crush if he didn't make the "obligatory psychotic jackass" so compelling and attractive. He's another actor who does humour and drama equally well.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA

Actually Nominated

Stockard Channing, "The West Wing" (NBC)
Tyne Daly, "Judging Amy" (CBS)
Blythe Danner, "Huff" (Showtime)
Sandra Oh, "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC)
CCH Pounder, "The Shield" (FX)

Should Have Been Nominated

Blythe Danner, "Huff" (Showtime)
Merrilyn Gann, "Everwood" (WB)
Yoon-jin Kim, "Lost" (ABC)
Sandra Oh, "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC)
Becky Wahlstrom, "Joan of Arcadia" (CBS)

I frequently like to watch characters that are prickly and mean on the surface but can be sweet (eg. Dr. Cox, Dr. Abbott on Everwood, Logan on VM, Luke on GG) and Blythe Danner's Izzy is that kind of complex character - fun to watch, not fun in real life.

Sandra Oh's Cristina is also prickly, and I also love that she's so career-driven. Grey's Anatomy isn't my favourite show but I watch it for Sandra Oh, and her performance makes the show enjoyable.

Merrilyn Gann feels - and looks - like a real mom, so her struggle with cancer was very emotional and upsetting for me. I was delighted that she was added to the title credits this year and hope she continues to get good storylines (and not be killed off!).

On Lost I could have done with less Kate episodes and more of Sun (Yoon-jin Kim). She definitely also had an interesting character and back story, and gives a really subtle and touching performance.

Becky Wahlstrom's Grace is one of my all-time favourite tv characters so she had to be on my nomination wish list. She had such a great storyline this year, in which we got to see the more vulnerable side of her as she opened up to Luke. The stuff about her mom's alcoholism was really well-done especially the scene when neither she or Luke talk. I love when actors are able to express emotions without dialogue (despite my love of writing dialogue)!

Whew! That was a lot of tv writing (even for me).

A few minutes ago I got a notice that my copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been shipped. I'm so excited about getting it tomorrow!!!
