Um, anyway … To make up for my (almost) tv-less weekend I’ve been watching lots and lots of television.
Supernatural ‘Something Wicked’ (1:18), Could I love the brothers more?
This episode is such a good example why Supernatural succeeds as a show, because of its focus on the characters. I suspect that most viewers don’t care that much about the demon of the week (DotW), it’s Sam and Dean that keep people watching (and not just because the of extreme hotness, although that certainly helps!!!). Kudos to the SPN producers for creating a show that is easy to tune in to because the mythology isn’t too complex, and which explores the relationship between the two engaging and charming main characters. See, if Dick Wolf wanted tips on how to make a “charactercedural”, he should watch SPN and note that it’s about relationships and interpersonal dynamics, and not always sex, that makes for a successful show. (fyi: Conviction continues to equate sex with character depth.)
As most people with siblings know, the oldest always feels responsible for his/her little brother(s)/sister(s), I know I was/am very protective about my little brother (who is much taller than me). This episode explored this dynamic well by interspersing flashbacks of the adorable younger version of Sam and Dean (which nicely connected to the DotW), and additionally contrasting it with the young brothers at the hotel.
There were also some absolutely fun scenes, particularly the fake out with the old lady and the upside down cross. I adored how the scene went quickly from scary and tense to really funny. I like when shows have a sense of humour. And speaking of, I loved when the kid said Two queens about Sam and Dean.
I loved the brotherly moments:
- Dean admitting he would do anything for Sam.
- And then later Sam telling Dean he appreciated everything Dean had done for him.
- Loved how Dean responded cynically Oh god, kill me now.
See the show could have left it there, and it would have been a good episode but they actually went a step further and made it an excellent episode. The discussion about wishing for innocence (instead of knowing about demons) was really heart-breaking. It was very poignant as they watch the car drive away with the young boy whose innocence is gone forever. My favourite moment was, of course, Sam wishing he could be innocent and Dean wishing Sam could have that too.
Yeah, I love those Winchester boys. Sighs
A couple of How I Met Your Mother episodes including the one with Alexis Denisof
I finally saw Barney’s back-story and it was, say it with me “Leg-en-dary”!! How awesome is it that Barney used to be a Peace Corps loving, long-haired, zine making hippie?! I like the entire cast of HIMYM, but Neil Patrick Harris owns that show. That episode was a pay off for viewers because of how it tied in Barney’s constant use of the Peace Corps story to hook up with girls and because it explained the origin of “suit up” (such a great moment when he finds the poster with “suit up” on it).
Also, that same episode has a made-up game, which is one of my favourite things on sitcoms because the games can be totally random and bizarre (Friends had 2 awesome episode with invented games that always crack me up). I loved that it was called Marshgammon, but that there was no elements of backgammon in it.
But, on to the Alexis Denisof episode!! Sadly, he was only in the one scene. I was wishing for more Alexis, but I take what I can get. It was weird to see him freakishly tanned with creepy hair and acting all sleezy. He was very good in the role, and I’ll be looking forward to him in the finale.
Big time spoilers for Veronica Mars ‘I am God’ (2:18) and Citizen Kane
Even though I’m getting together with my friend tonight to watch the episode, I have ZERO restraint so I watched this when I came home last night (despite the lateness of the hour and my slight drunkenness). Holy crap, this was an awesome episode, and that’s not the alcohol talking!! I’m actually glad I’ll be seeing it again because there was so much to take in!
Even though it was a plot device to have Veronica talking to Rebecca James about her dreams (so that we could hear about them and Veronica’s further bus crash investigation), it worked well. The reason I’m not unhappy with it is because Rebecca James has been on the show before, so they didn’t suddenly bring in a school therapist for this episode, and it makes sense that she’d be talking to Veronica about her behaviour. Also, Veronica is more likely to trust Rebecca with this information than someone else.
Now that I’ve got that out of the way: OMG bus crash!!! There was so much information that was tantalizing and didn’t quite give us all the answers.
Here’s some sort of vague conclusions I arrived at:
- Lucky, who is creepy, is definitely involved somehow. (Ooooh Logan/Veronica making out flashback!! Loved it!)
- There’s some significance to the replaying of The Aaron Echolls expose. Logan’s mom isn’t really dead? There’s some clue in it we haven’t noticed? The answer is somewhere here. It's right in front of us and we're too blind to see it!/channeling Xander. Or perhaps it was just there to make Logan more sympathetic to Wallace? I’m guessing it’s more than one of those options and something else I haven’t thought of.
- Rhonda’s family (Rhonda is a bus crash victim) won insurance money from Woody Goodman is important.
- The gay student on the bus was planning the “outing of all outings”. My money is on Woody Goodman. It answers why that student was going to a baseball stadium.
- What’s going on with Woody is possibly connected to Cassidy’s weird behaviour.
- Dick and Cassidy’s dad taking insurance out on them right before the bus crash is significant. Is Big Dick behind the crash?
- Someone in the limo (Dick? The driver? Someone sitting with the driver? Gia?) set off the bomb.
- Weevil is not behind the bomb. I refuse to believe he’s behind it. Besides, how could he detonate it while riding on his motorcycle?
I enjoyed the details in the episode, like how in the dreams the girl who’d been sleeping with Dick wore a “I heart Dick” t-shirt and that Meg had a “baby on board” t-shirt. The eggs were also an interesting touch because of how they connected to Logan and Wallace’s story. It was fun to have Mr. Wu in the episode again, and he was adorable.
I loved Dick saying So bad it’s good? Was he thinking about Snakes on a Plane? Also his Brokeback Mountain reference was very entertaining.
Wallace and Logan working together was adorable. I think that they, like me, were proud of Veronica for getting into Stanford.
Favourite quotes:
Veronica to Wallace Didn’t I email you, you’re never allowed to die.
Keith re: Veronica in Clemmons closet: Yep. That’s mine alright.
Veronica: I am God is just an album and Rosebud is just a sled. I didn’t just ruin Citizen Kane for you, did I?
House quote
House: You do realize that the point of metaphors is scare people from doing things, by telling them that something much scarier is going to happen than what will really happen. God, I wish I had a metaphor to explain that better.
Heee!!!
Gilmore Girls ‘The Real Paul Anka’ 2:18, More whacked out dreams
Last night’s tv theme was obviously weird dreams because of the prominent featuring of dreams in both VM and Gilmore Girls. I love dream sequences, so the best part of the episode was the surreal real Paul Anka and dog Paul Anka dream.
I have a hard time being objective about the Rory and Logan stuff because I dislike his character so much. Instead of being moved by Rory’s declaration of love about Logan (to Jess), I was disappointed. At this point, if I had to choose, I’d rather see her with Jess any day than with spoiled-rich-kid-with-strict-dad-woe-is-me Logan. Ahem. I suspect that’s not going to happen.
I really want Luke and Lorelei to resolve the issue of Luke’s daughter. Even Emily realizes that the situation is ridiculous!! I have confidence that this episode is building to some good blow-outs/resolution with Luke and Lorelei. Let’s just hope it happens soon!!
It’s Nicholas Brendon and, of course, his twin brother Kelly Donovan’s birthday. Happy birthday Nick and Kelly!!!
