cordelianne: (VM Mars' Hmm)
So it’s been a crazy week in which I worked too much (because of all the slacking I’d done previously), and didn’t get enough sleep because I still tried to do everything I normally do after work.

Now I’m looking at the “notes” I made while watching various tv shows and shaking my head at how unhelpful they are. For example, here’s something I wrote about this about this week’s Gilmore Girls episode: “Come what may. (Moulin Rouge)” Um, what? I think someone may have said that line and I was noting that it’s the title of that song in Moulin Rouge, but I can’t recall the context.

Anyway, here are my thoughts about my tv shows:

Gilmore Girls ‘Driving Miss Gilmore’ 6:21

Seeing Amy Sherman-Palladino & Daniel Palladino’s names in the writing credits made me sad because neither of them will be working on the show next year. It’s very distressing that Amy Sherman-Palladino is leaving because she’s the show creator, this is her vision, and she’s written at least a third of episodes. She and Daniel Palladino have shaped the show. I’m concerned that the show’s quality and spirit will suffer next year. Let’s face it, Sherman-Palladino is the Gilmore Girls.

I was very pleased to see Danny Strong (aka Jonathan on BtVS) back as Doyle. He and Paris made the scene with Logan so much more enjoyable. I try, I really do (I don’t want to dislike a character), but I just can’t care about Logan.

The revelation that Emily and Richard are buying a home for Luke and Lorelai was a heart-wrenching moment. Such an impressive show of support from Emily and Richard, who are not Luke’s biggest fans. However, Lorelai telling her mom she doesn’t think the wedding will happen is a wonderfully painful moment. I like how we saw the worst aspect of Lorelai’s relationship with her mother (their bickering and pettiness), and their best aspect (Emily being supportive and Lorelai trusting her mom with her worries).

I dread what seems to be in store for Luke & Lorelai, because I’d really like for them to work. Not that I don’t think there’s problems, but it would be nice if we could see them resolve them together.

But my big revelation this week (when I was doing the favourite character moments meme was that Lorelai’s name should be spelled with an “a” instead of an “e”. It turns out I’ve been spelling it wrong for ages (I kept spelling it Lorelei). I checked the back of the season one DVD that I own, and theWB website, and they both agree with the transcripts that spell it with an “a” (I actually “corrected” the transcripts to the “e” spelling because I thought they were wrong). How have I never noticed my mistake until now?

Veronica Mars ‘Happy Go Lucky’ 2:21

This is one of the shows in which I made completely unhelpful notes, eg. “Woody is a pedophile.” Yeah, that I’d remember, especially since we’ve been speculating about that for weeks now. It would be more helpful if I’d noted something more specific! Clearly this not being in school is making my note writing bad (that’s me semi-quoting Xander, which means my BtVS knowledge is still good!)

I do recall finding those last few minutes before the credits with Lucky and the gun incredibly intense. I believe there was gasping and shaking, especially when he shot Wallace. Oh! I did make a note about that: “Oh crap. I’m shaking from the opening.”

I loved when Veronica said: Elementary, my dear Wallace.

I’m amused by the details I caught and noted down, including this: “Mac will be at Hurst!! There better be a 3rd season.”

And I also remembered that “the kid who’s with Cassidy is the one who filmed Logan’s mom.” He was the freshman in “Mars vs. Mars” (1:14) who had captured Logan’s mom plummeting to her death off the bridge. My theory is that he and Cassidy were both molested when they were in Little League. Why you ask? Because why else did that character return for a few seconds in a scene it was unnecessary for him to be in?

Also, yay for Cassidy and Mac getting back together! And yay for Weevil getting a “B”. Too bad that he won’t get to enjoy that victory for long (oh those pesky kids!).

Scrubs ‘My Fallen Idol’ 5:21

This is an episode that I actually made decent notes about! Yay me.

J.D. and Turk are the gayest straight best friends ever. I love that there was a flashback to their first attempted hug.

Of course, this episode was much more about J.D. and Dr. Cox’s relationship. It was neat to see another layer be added when J.D. was able to inspire Dr. Cox. I am so in love with what J.D. said to him that I transcribed it:

J.D.: I was scared. I guess after all this time, I still think of you as, like, this superhero, that’ll help me out of any situation I’m in. I needed that. But that’s my problem, you know, and I’ll deal with that. I guess I came over here to tell you, how proud of you I am. Not because you did the best you could for those patients. But because after 20 years of being a doctor, when things go badly you still take it this hard. I gotta tell you, man. That’s the kind of doctor I want to be.”

When J.D. says he thinks of Dr. Cox as a superhero, it recalls to me the theme song in the credits (Superman by Lazlo Bane):

But I can't do this all on my own
No, I know I'm no Superman
I'm no Superman

I love seeing J.D. step out of his constant yearning for Dr. Cox’s approval and become a mentor for the man who’s been mentoring him.

I love this show!!

The Amazing Race ‘Man, They Should Have Used Their Fake Names’

This is all I wrote about the episode: “Karma, baby karma.”

I was referring to the frat guys’ cab not coming after they called and canceled the cabs for two other teams.

Thank goodness this was non-elimination and the hippies are still in it! MoJo annoyed me by complaining about the Yield. It’s part of the game! And as if they wouldn’t have yielded the hippies if they’d gotten there first.

Smallville – Oracle 5:21

Okay, I know that Smallville sucks at consistency, but how could anyone believe that Jonathan – he of the sanctimonious speeches - would suggest murder. Here’s my thoughts after Jonathan first appeared to Clark:
“That’s so not his dad telling him to kill Lionel.
Jonathan would NEVER suggest Clark kill anyone. Please!!!”

I’m kind of entertained by my random reactions to the episode as it aired (anything in italics are my additions now):

Lois could so kick Lana’s ass!
“Bad boy blues” I was entertained by Lois saying that phrase. Although I didn’t buy the whole Lois and Lana are suddenly bonding thing.

Chloe: “All right. Hand me a cloak and call me Horatio.” I love Chloe, and that’s actually a decent line – go Smallville writers!

Lionel to Lex: “You’re involved with Milton Fine.” *snickers* I love the subtext on this show
Lionel to Lex: “And not knowing who you’re in bed with can lead to a very uncomfortable awakening.” I love that the slashy subtext just gets more intense!

Possessed!Lionel. Very cool.

Lex collecting viruses, and altering them into vaccines. I think that was me noting that info for myself. I’m not sure why I did that since it’s better not to pay too much attention to the story details on the show.

Oh this totally isn’t Jonathan. (When “Jonathan” appears to Martha.)
Ah ha! I was right!

Oh James is so very pretty. Especially when he does the head tilt. I am so shallow. *g*

Lionel: “Your father would never make you a murderer, Clark.” I think that’s about the truest thing Lionel’s ever said.

Wow, good acting on Jonathon’s part, he looks like JM as Fine.

Lex: “Clark’s specialty is barging in and then making you feel like you’re the one who should apologize.” *nods*

*I've just realized that the commenting on my own notes approach to episode reviews is clearly influenced by the awesome and entertaining Season 7 BtVS reviews by [livejournal.com profile] earth_vexer.*

Supernatural ‘Devil’s Trap’ 1:22

I love how the previouslies are basically fanvids! This makes “previously on” sequences so much more interesting. I demand all shows start doing this now!! Ahem, anyway…

I’m consistently impressed by how Supernatural avoids being completely predictable and how it can surprise me. I gasped in shock multiple times throughout the episode. Not that the episode didn’t have its predictable aspects, but overall a very satisfying season finale.

One of the things I love about the show is that the characters aren’t always doing completely stupid things (Hey there Smallville, you should take note of this!). When the boys find their dad, they apply what they’ve learned (the demon(s) can possess people) and check to see if their dad’s possessed. Very smart. I love that it doesn’t work, and their dad is possessed.

Unlike Clark Kent who forgets what his dad was all about, Dean and Sam actually use their memories and determine that their dad is possessed. That sequence was excellent. I loved how the brothers and we the viewers were drawn in by the dad’s congratulatory words to his sons. It was exactly what Dean, Sam and we want to hear: that he’s proud of them. Because it’s wish-fulfillment it takes a few minutes for the realization to set in. I think that Dean and I realized at the same time that it wasn’t really his dad. Suddenly the difference in his cadence becomes obvious when he’s trying to get Dean to give him the gun.

Kudos to Jenson Ackles’ delivery of “You’re not my dad.” That was an incredibly powerful line. And it’s nice to see the bond between Sam & Dean pay off with Sam putting his trust in Dean.

Once possessed!dad has control there’s a little too much talking (my theory is if you’re evil, you’d start with the killing asap), fortunately it leads up to an awesome dilemma. I really liked that Sam & Dean have to shoot (and kill) their dad to kill the demon. And it’s even better that they couldn’t do it. The whole thing works nicely as a metaphor for growing up and learning when to reject your parents and when to embrace them.

And those final moments? I was reminded of dark!Willow controlling the truck in Two to Go. Their car being smashed by the truck is a very good shocking moment. I pondered whether the multiple shots of the crash (overlapping editing) are effective and have determined that I think they are. It draws out the shock and increases the intensity of the collision, especially when the multiple violent shots are contrasted with the black screen immediately after the crash. I adore that this all happens while CCR’s “Bad Moon on the Rise” plays. And those last few shots of the song playing and surveying the bloodied and unconscious Winchesters? Awesome.

I did see Mission: Impossible III with a couple of friends and it was a fun time. There was a lot of Tom Cruise but I was entertained when they played “We Are Family” when he was running (I leaned over to my friend and said “Well, Tom is very very gay.”) Philip Seymour Hoffman was excellent, as was John Rhys Meyers!

Something that interested me: Laurence Fishbourne’s character says something about an invisible man. And then says: “The Wells version not the Ellison one.” I was the only one in the threatre who chucked. But upon further thought, I realized that I only know about Ralph Ellison’s novel because of my American Lit class. And I’ve also studied H.G. Wells in university. In high school most Canadians don’t read a lot of American or British novels, the only American one I recall studying is “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the British one (although there is lots of Shakespeare) is “Lord of the Flies”. Other than that it’s Canadian, ie. Mordecai Richler and Margaret Laurence. I even recall reading bad Canadian poetry. After being one of the few people in the theatre who got the reference, I suspect I am even more of a book geek than I’d realized. Yay, my English degree is useful, I can now get jokes no one else does!

Not really retuning to talking about the movie: It was almost worth it just for the completely awesome trailers. We saw Superman Returns (I’m so excited for Kevin Spacey as Lex), X-Men: The Last Stand, Pirates of the Caribbean and Pulse (Kristin Bell, aka Veronica Mars, stars). One of my friends, who’s a big comic book fan, got so very excited for the first two that it was contagious! And she said she’d see Pulse with me, although I’m not sure if I’ll be able to handle it. I get way too scared to watch too many scary movies.

Before I finish this rambly post, I wanted to give people a heads up that I’m planning another music post for this weekend. They’ll be more Arcade Fire and another band/musician (*is mysterious*). I thought I’d see if anyone had any other requests. I love sharing things that make me happy so if there’s something you want to hear more of, let me know!! *g*
