I have exciting news about my life! I applied to Library School.... and I got accepted!!! I start this fall - that's just 4 months away!
I'll actually be in the Masters of Information Studies programme at the Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto, in the library stream. Considering how wordy that is, I'm sure you can see why I'm just telling people I'm going to Library School because that is essentially what I'll be doing. I'm starting part-time so that I can continue to work full-time but may try doing a final year full-time (we'll see).
This is big and wonderful news for me for a number of reasons:
- I'm one of those people who has many interests and has always had trouble narrowing down something I want to focus on. It took me years to decide to get my undergraduate degree in English Literature, and even at the end of the programme I was wondering if I should have gotten a Cinema Studies degree instead. Having talked to some friends who are librarians and read about the programme and the field, it really seems the ideal path for me - I can explore my many interests and I can work with books (I know there's more to it than that!). Basically the more I read about being a Librarian the more I wondered "why has this never occurred to me before?! This is perfect for me!"
- There was a long time when I thought I'd never be able to get into a graduate programme because of some, er, dodgy grades in the middle of my undergraduate degree. BUT! Not only did I get in, but I was able to find 3 professors to write me letters of recommendations plus my boss wrote me one too! It was such a relief to know I hadn't screwed myself out of future opportunities - and a reminder that if I want something I should go for it.
- I'm actually excited to go back to school to study in this field! When I finished my degree I swore I wasn't going back to school - I was super burned out (ie. It took me until just recently to be able to read books again). It's weird to be excited about school (it's been a long time) but I think this just shows that this is the perfect programme for me.
- A wonderful bonus of this degree, is that with it I'll be able to relatively easily work in the U.S. which would open up opportunities to be able to live with the girlfriend. (I feel the need to point out that this isn't the reason I chose this programme - I've looked at plenty of other options that could get me to the U.S. and rejected them, this is fortuitous forces aligning.)
So now I just need to cut down my crazy amounts of TV watching come this fall. I suspect this'll be the hardest part of going back to school! ;)
