This place certainly needs a good tidying

It took most of the day – and involved a lot of dust – but I finally accomplished thoroughly cleaning my apartment. That’s one check off the “when I’m done school” list. I’m still working on the “sleep, sleep, sleep and definitely sleep in” part.

I’m also well on my way to seeing lots of movies. I have 2 tickets for the Inside Out film festival, and have plans to see Unleashed and Star Wars this week. I’m so excited about actually going to the theatre again – even if it is to see Star Wars. As much as I love the original trilogy, episodes I & II have been so disappointing, I’m expecting episode III to also disappoint. Despite this I’m compelled by some strange force (inadvertent bad pun) to still see the movie.

Entertainment Weekly (EW) is my favourite magazine (and the only thing I’d read for pleasure during school), partly because I frequently agree with their movie and television reviews. Yet again, this week I discovered that EW and I are clearly on the same wavelength. Just as I’ve been feeling that The O.C. is off this season and that Everwood is kicking ass, I read the most recent issue of EW and they basically agree with me. If I recall correctly, they gave The O.C. a C+ and Everwood an A – I totally agree with these grades.

This week’s Everwood was excellent. I was sobbing throughout the episode. The show is very balanced – and I mean that in the best possible way. On Everwood the bad things that people do are often done with good intentions and motivated by love. People are delightfully flawed and complex on that show. I am so glad it was renewed!!

Speaking of renewals: Yea to the WB for renewing Everwood, Gilmore Girls, Reba, Smallville and Charmed. Even though I’m not a big fan of Charmed, I watch it and was weirdly pleased that it’s renewed. Also it’s nice to see that they’re bringing in more scripted dramas and comedies, lots with women in the leading roles, and at least one sci-fi/fantasy show.

The ABC announcements didn’t affect me since I knew that Lost, Alias and Desperate Housewives are coming back.

Arrested Development is renewed!! Yea to Fox for taking the risk of renewing a low-rated but critically acclaimed show.

I’m a bit worried that NBC isn’t airing Scrubs in the fall – I don’t want it to get permanently shelved. Although I am pleased that The Office is renewed.

Tomorrow CBS makes its announcement – then I’ll know if Joan of Arcadia is renewed. Zap2it has an article that CBS will likely cancel either Judging Amy or Joan of Arcadia. From what I’ve seen of Judging Amy, it’s a really good show but I really really really want more Joan!!

Not drowning, wading

Sigh, Joan of Arcadia wasn't renewed. I'm feeling down - but it's not as bad as it could be. Every single other show that I watch - no matter how bad the ratings - has been renewed so I still have lots to look forward to. In particularly I'm excited about Veronica Mars, Arrested Development, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, The Office, and Lost.

Although the cancellation of Angel was heartbreaking, it also prepared me for the likelihood that intelligent and thoughtful shows will be canceled. I'm feeling irrationally mad at CBS right now, and if they didn't air The Amazing Race and Numb3rs (which were both renewed), I'd break up with the network. I describe myself as irrational because I understand that this is ultimately all about business. I may watch television for well-developed and long story arcs, character development, and fun but the networks are a business and, sadly, money is really what matters not the quality of a show.

I will miss you Joan of Arcadia. I'll miss how the show provided thought-provoking episodes about spirituality. I'll miss Joan's combination of passion and teenage apathy. I'll miss Helen's passionate outbursts. I'll miss Will's pursuit of justice. I'll miss Kevin's humourous quips. I'll miss Luke's brainy insights and cuteness with Grace. I'll miss Adam's incredible sweetness. I'll miss Lily's off-handed sense of humour. And of course I'll really miss Grace - not just because she's hot but also because of her complex character. I loved her tough exterior masking her insecurity and family secrets. The moments when she opened up to Luke were wonderful to watch.

I'm going to stop now because it's just getting depressing. I'm going to remember Joan of Arcadia as a show that caused good ripples.
