I’m mostly caught up on this week’s television watching, except for tonight’s shows. The highlight of this week is definitely Scrubs. The episode reminded me why I fell in love with the show in the first place, but I will continue the gushing safely behind a spoiler tag

Scrubs ‘My Lunch’ 5:20

This is why I love Scrubs: it can make me laugh, and then rip my heart out leaving me a sobbing wreck. It’s the same reason why BtVS/AtS are my all-time favourite shows; the ability to mix genres and ellict multiple responses from the viewer in a short span of time.

The episode initially seems to be about J.D.’s endless quest for Dr. Cox’s friendship, whether The Todd is gay, and the quest for donor organs for 3 patients. It is about all those things, but ultimately it’s about how complicated and undefinable things are. And how we can all fuck up, big time. Yep, this show is classified as a comedy.

First of all, the episode demonstrated that Dr. Cox and J.D. really are friends, which made me – and J.D. – really happy. However, sometimes that isn’t enough.

Secondly, I adored how the question of whether Todd is gay was handled. He does seem like one of those guys who’s overcompensating to cover up his gayness. However, I loved that when he embraced being gay, he was equally as rude and crude, just to men as well as women. I adored when he said to Turk: You and I should have sex. That indicates to me that he knows gay culture very well!

What made the story excellent was the revelation that Todd definitely likes women, and most likely is also into men. Now this could mean that he’s bisexual, but even that seems too easy and simplistic.

Janitor: What the hell are you?
Todd: I'm The Todd.

The episode suggests that sexuality is fluid and not easily definable, because everyone is different and sexuality is ultimately about who a person is not some category. [This is why, if forced to define myself, I use queer because it’s a broader term that incorporates political dimensions as well as sexual ones, and feels less restricting. Oh, and there is that whole L.M. Montgomery-used-it-in-her-novels dimension!] This would really be enough to make me love the episode, but there’s more!

The third thing the episode accomplished was beautifully breaking our hearts. This episode is on par with my two favourites, "My Screw Up" (Dr. Cox deals with the death of a good friend, played by Brandon Fraser, but we don't find out until the end that the friend is dead even though we and Dr. Cox see him in the episode. 3:15) and "My Philosphy" (J.D. bonds with a patient who's waiting for a heart transplant and discuss with her their idea of what death must be like. When it’s clear that she’s dying, he imagines her singing an aria, and then it ends with her flat-lining. 2:13). Just thinking about those episodes makes me cry.

When Dr. Cox breaks down over his dead patient, I was sobbing so hard for his loss and because I don’t recall seeing his character lose control like that. It’s an unbelievably powerful acting moment for John C. McGinley (why has no one given this man an Emmy yet?) because he’s so intense it’s scary.

I had a taping issue at that moment, so rewound and re-watched/re-taped, figuring I wouldn’t be crying as hard (ha!), and discovered that the key moment came afterwards. As Dr. Cox is walking out, J.D. tries to stop him by reminding him of his own statement that If you start blaming yourself for every patient’s death, you’ll never be able to return to work. And Dr. Cox just says I know, and walks out the door. End of episode. So powerful. I’m tearing up as I write this. I'm pleased to see that next week’s episode deals with the fall out from this decision.

Brilliant episode. If I ever made a list of best episodes from this television season, it would be topping the list.

Since I gushed about the incredible awesomeness of Scrubs, I’m only saying a couple of sentences about the other shows. Seriously, I’m actually succinct.

24 ‘1am-2am’ 5:19

Senator Heller DRIVES HIS CAR OFF A CLIFF!!! How insanely cracktastic is that?!

How I Met Your Mother ‘Mary the Paralegal’ 1:19

Alyson Hannigan (as Lily) sniping at Alexis Denisof (as sleazy news anchor) was awesome and so funny!

Also, I was entertained by the term “lawyered.”

Gilmore Girls ‘Super Cool Party People’ 6:20

Rory telling Mitchum Hunztburger off was excellent, and a great mirror to him crushing her dreams last season around this time.

I think that April’s mom, Anna, is being ridiculously old-fashioned about not letting April get to know Lorelei. As if marriage equals a stable relationship. Also, Lorelei is clearly a caring person who helped with April’s birthday and took the time to try and smooth things over for Luke. This is not someone who would treat April badly. And April is clearly an adaptable kid who would likely deal well if Luke and Lorelei split (it would be the fans who would be the wrecks!).

Veronica Mars ‘Look Who’s Stalking’ 2:20

I’m dying to know what exactly is up with Woody Goodman!!

The Logan/Veronica stuff had me swooning and flailing. I was amused by Logan’s “epic” speech, it reminded me of Spike’s views on love. Of course it ended badly, and because I’m weird, it made me root for them and love them as a pairing more.

My crazy theory: Mr. Manning (Meg’s dad) is involved in the bus crash. He may not be entirely responsible, because there are clearly many players involved, but he’s a player. Why do I think this? Because he bailed out Lucky, who’s also involved in some way. Also, the treatment of Mr. Manning reminds me of how Aaron Echolls was depicted (although we’ve seen Mr. Manning less). They both seem to be part of other storylines (eg. Duncan/Meg/baby or Logan’s character development) but are actually part of the key mystery. Oh! And he probably wasn't happy about Meg's pregnancy.

Smallville ‘Mercy’ 5:19

Sure this is a rip off of Saw (which I haven’t seen because I’m a wimp), but it was definitely one of the better episodes this season. John Glover is one of the better actors on the show, so when he’s prominently featured in an episode the quality automatically goes up.

After watching the episode, my friend predicted now that Lionel definitively knows about Clark he’ll die. I think she’s right.

Even though this post is ridiculously long (thanks a lot Scrubs!), I wanted to draw your attention to my new default icon! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] femmenerd, who directed me to [livejournal.com profile] book_icons, I now have a bunch of Anne of Green Gables and L.M. Montgomery icons (including an Anne/Diana one!). This one is from the cover of the first edition of Pat of Silver Bush (1933). I actually own this book (as well as many other old editions of LMM’s work) and I love the cover art, even though it doesn’t really fit the book.

ETA: There are Veronica Mars season two spoilers in the comments up to episode 2:20 (Look Who's Stalking). There's also some really damn good speculation by [livejournal.com profile] ladyinhottpink about the answers to the major mysteries.

okay, i have a theory about the bus crash, woody goodman, meg manning's dad,, lucky, and veronica's STD and how they are ALL connected. although it is a little soap-operaish. want to hear it? (it is partly based on some speculation i've seen on the internet.

Oh, soap-operaish?!! That sounds fun! I'd guessed the Veronica's STD is from Duncan sleeping with Kendall. But now that I read your list maybe it's something more twisted. And I definitely think all those people are involved.

Tell your theory!!
[identity profile] ladyinhottpink.livejournal.com wrote:

okay, brace yourself. i think that woody goodman & mr manning were both involved with the sexual abuse of children that they coached in little league (lucky, for example, is an obvious candidate for goodman's abuse - hence his need for revenge, particularly the filming of goodman's son's soccer game). if manning also had sexually abused his own daughters (hence increasing meg's motivation to report him to children's services to protect her younger sister) then maybe he gave meg an STD, which she passed on to duncan who gave it to veronica. goodman, i think, is too obvious a candidate for the bus crash - i mean, we saw explosives in his hanger?!?!? and he has been creepy all season? way too obvious. mr manning, however, i think has potential. if he knew that meg was pregnant (and what if the baby were his & he was about to be exposed) or if she was threatening to reveal his abusive behaviour, he could have been motivated to take her out. also, if some of the students on the bus were the ones that he and goodman had abused, then that would increase his motives. further, if meg knew she was pregnant (and also if she thought it was her dad's) and/or was planning on exposing her father's abuse, that might explain why she was out-of-character rude to veronica the day of the crash....... only time will tell!

See when I read your first comment I actually pondered Meg's baby being her dad's/molesting her, but was so horrified by the idea I decide to wait to see your theory.

I definitely think that Woody sexually abused kids (I'm guessing Cassidy was one of them based on his discomfit with sex). One of my friends pointed out that in the first episode this season Woody mentions that he coached some of the students in attendance (and Cassidy was there). Lucky being one of the molested kids makes so much sense. Did you see the scary preview for next week?

Yes, Woody is too obvious to be the actual bomber. See, when Lamb told Keith that Mr. Manning had bailed Lucky out I yelled at the screen "OMG Mr. Manning did it!!!" It was a gut reaction, but there's lots to back it up. He's the perfect likely, seemingly unlikely, suspect. Your theories about Meg and her dad definitely increase the likihood that he's a suspect. Maybe Woody helped him or he worked with the Fitzpatricks?

Yep, it's a very good theory! :)

damn, i had forgotten about cassidy! i think this further backs up my theories though... also, and i won't be happy about this if it's true, but do you remember in a recent episode it was revealed that one of the kids who died on the bus was talking about how he was going to make a major "outing" of someone? veronica thought it was a teacher, but i wonder if it might be goodman? (i will be pissed if this is true since it will link homosexuality & sexual abuse again. boring. and stupid.)

i think we can successfully elminate: woody, kendall, mr casablancas, any of the fitzpatricks (directly, anyways), jackie's dad.....

i'm pretty confident in my thoery, but i will also throw out there that maybe it was the kanes?

or, my personal fave, that the mannings were sicentologists and didn't like meg's "deviance" and so decided to have tom cruise "take care of her"
[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com wrote:
Apr. 28th, 2006 05:51 am (UTC)
When the student was talking about the "outing" I'd assumed he meant Woody. The link to homosexuality and sexual abuse would be very annoying. I'm hoping that they won't go there, because the show will often do the unexpected.

I agree with your eliminations, although I suspect that they're all connected, in some way, to the mystery.

I'm confident in your theory as well. Although there is that Tom Cruise theory! They did mention him last week, hmmm foreshadowing? hee

I have *just recently* tried watching Scrubs. It's been recommended to me for ages, but I'd never tuned in for various reasons. I've seen a few episodes that I quite liked, and so I watched the one you just reviewed with interest. I was shocked at the way it developed, and it hit me so hard! I actually had no idea until this ep what a mixed-genre concept this series is.

Why haven't I been watching it before? Er, yeah, it's entirely my own fault.

But now I want to go through and see the whole series. Dr. Cox is an amazing character, and the whole episode was so sharp in all of its moments and in its juggling of the multiple arcs of the plot with comic and devastating turns of the plot.

Awww, and I ended up *loving* The Todd! You've got to adore a character that ultimately has such a huge relish for life, crude though he seems. I was so happy that he discovered his fabulously polymorphously perverse leanings. :)

Yay for Scrubs love!! I fortunately discovered it in the second season when I was channel flicking (I'd avoided it because I thought it was a medical show). I happened upon an episode as amazing as "My Lunch", which brought me to tears just minutes after I'd been dying of laughter.

This episode definitely is one of the show's best episodes ever, it's not always quite this devastating. However, that being said it is a marvelous mixed-genre show that doesn't always end happily with everything tied up neatly in a bow (its sitcom episode "My Life in Four Cameras" beautifully demonstrates the difference between Scrubs and sitcoms, while still celebrating the sitcom). It normally does an exception job of balancing more serious and compelling issues with surreal fantasies and big-time funny.

I love Dr. Cox's character so much, he does the most hysterical rants ever and is also responsible for some of the most poignant and touching moments.

The Todd is such a fan favourite (oh yeah, I love him). You're so right about his relish for life, which is what makes him such a fun character. He does have fabulously polymorphously perverse leanings (I am wowed by your smarts!!).

I fear that I may have spoiled a couple of earlier episodes in my review, so hopefully you didn't read the episode summaries too closely. *frowns at self*

Oh, something else to look forward to in Scrubs: the 100th episode was a homage to the Wizard of Oz. It's just wonderful! *g*

First, I just want to say that I love Scrubs too. I think it is one of the very best 1/2 hour television shows that has ever been on TV. I MISSED THIS WEEK'S EPISODE BECAUSE MY DAMN DVR EFFED UP!!!! Grr!!! I'm sooo pissed. Especially because Dr. Cox is my very favorite character and I know I'm supposed to lust after Zach Braff, but I don't, I lust after John C. McGinley. Big time. Woe! I am so sad that I missed this one. And I'm way too paranoid to do the whole downloading thing, so I'll just have to wait until it comes out on DVD. ::kicks my DVR::

Seeing AH and AD together was teh awesome! Despite his hair sending me screaming for the "blankets of escape". I think Amy Acker is going to be on this season too! I can only hope that she gets a scene with AD as well.

Oh, I'm right there with you in the heartache making me ship V/L even more. I was squeeing like a little girl during his speech, aww. ::hearts them::

I'm not sure what's going on with Mr. Manning. I don't know if his plotline is about the bus crash, or some children sex abuse ring subplot. I'm definitely of the mind that Duncan only had sex with Meg, which would mean that he got the VD from her. This leads me to connect Meg with Lucky because of all the stuff she said about Lucky in Veronica's dream. Maybe Lucky had a VD that he caught from the sex abuse ring that he passed on to Meg? I'm not sure about him directly tying to the bus crash. I'm more likely to think that it had something to do with Mayor Woody and his involvement in the sex ring of horror. ;D Maybe Lucky found out about Woody having something to do with the bus crash and that is why he was blackmailing him? Hee, it's fun to speculate.

Are the spoilers in the comments to this thread relating to episodes that we haven't seen yet, or just what's already been played? I don't want to read them if they have spoilers for future episodes because I prefer to be spoiler free. Teee-heee, spoiler free since '83!

I don't watch 24 or The Gilmore Girls so you are released from having to listen to me ramble about those two. Hee!
[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com wrote:
Apr. 28th, 2006 08:24 am (UTC)
I'm such a spazz. The spoilers in the comments are for episodes up to this week's one (Look Who's Stalking), there's no spoilers for the last two episodes. I'm trying to remain spoiler free too (spoiler free since '83! hee!! You are very sharp!). I edited the post to clarify that. I was all worried that somebody like [livejournal.com profile] lillianmorgan, who hasn't seen any of season 2 would get spoiled in the comments. You should be fine, but I will warn you that I think [livejournal.com profile] ladyinhottpink's theory may be right.

Oh dear, I'm so very upset that you missed this week's Scrubs! *kicks your DVR too* I've already deleted it off my PVR. Damn. I LOVE Dr. Cox so much!! I really love J.D. too, because he's so girly. But Dr. Cox really makes the show in many ways.

Despite his hair sending me screaming for the "blankets of escape". heeee! The hair is so awful! *shudders* Oh yes, I'm greatly looking forward to Amy Acker!

I'm definitely of the mind that Duncan only had sex with Meg, which would mean that he got the VD from her. I had a brief moment of confusion because non-Duncan/Veronica fans refer to them as VD!! Lucky giving Meg VD is a good theory! Part of [livejournal.com profile] ladyinhottpink's theory is that Meg got it from her father (and he got VD from the sex abuse ring). The whole concept is very disturbing, but they may go there. I agree that Lucky didn't have anything directly to do with the bus crash, but I suspect he's somehow connected. Same for Woody. Like you I think Woody's involved in the child sex abuse ring, and I believe that's the cause of Cassidy's discomfort with sex.

I love your rambles. And I enjoy to ramble myself!! *hugs*

You are so nice to think of people who may not have seen season 2 yet! I read [livejournal.com profile] ladyinhottpink's speculations and they are very intriguing. I can't wait to see how this is all played out. Only two episodes left! And OMG, next week's episode looks kick ass.

I do love J.D., and I get a real kick out his antics with Turk. But my heart belongs to Dr. Cox. Sarcastic lil' bastard with such a warm heart underneath it all. Le sigh, he pleases me.

Teee-heee to my use of VD. I don't know why I put that down instead of STD. I just like the looks and sound of VD better. ::is odd:: I agree that the whole concept of Meg's dad sexually abusing her is disturbing, but then again, so was the whole Lily/Aaron thing last year. I wonder if they have the balls to go that far though. I agree with your thoughts on Cassidy being abused. What about next week's trailer? Didn't it look like Lucky who was the one waving the gun around at everyone? I wonder how that all plays into it. I wonder if he'll end up killing himself because of all the guilt. I think he really was trying to stop Woody. I believe that that is why he was stalking him and why he was about to tell Keith the truth when they were handcuffed together. Oh my, I can't wait for the next episode! *hugs*

J.D. and Turk are my favourite almost-gay-partners best friends. But Dr. Cox is so damn awesome!! I'm very interested in next week's episode, because it looks like it deals with what happened this week.

I just like the looks and sound of VD better. ::is odd:: heee! You're very funny!

Until How I Met Your Mother came along, Scrubs was the only sitcom I watched anymore. It's one of my favs. I adore Dr. Cox. And the Todd sitch? Priceless. Todd is Todd - no matter what his sexuality. Hee!

I loved seeing Alexis Denisoff with the helmet hair. Ye Gods! The only thing this character has in common with Wesley, original Wes that is, is an overinflated opinion of himself.

I know you're a long time Smallville fan, but mostly I've just been yelling 'where the fuck is James?!' at my set when it's on. *g* I sometimes have a completely one-track mind. Sigh.

I loved Heller driving his car off the cliff! It was, indeed, cracktastic!

Scrubs is such a kick ass show. This week's episode reminded me just why I love it.

Oh yes, Alexis Denisoff's helmet hair is hysterically horrible. He is like the original Wes in terms of the overinflated opinion of himself.

Although I'm a longtime Smallville viewer, it's more like watching a car wreck. There's only a few good actors on that show, so when JM's on it the quality increases. He'll be on this week (May 4th)!!!!!

I'm sure you'll enjoy VM when you see it! :)
