I guess I should talk about the Oscars for a second. I was annoyed that Crash won over Brokeback Mountain. [livejournal.com profile] crossoverman has some interesting thoughts on the win and [livejournal.com profile] karabair has an awesome theory about it.

Thank you to my friends who reminded me that the Oscars aren't actually about the best movies of the year. How could I actually forget that?! Silly me. I also must thank them for listening to me talk about how much I hate Queen's University (the university in my hometown) and its cultish school spirit because, for some odd reason, my annoyance with the Crash win fueled a completely unrelated rant! I am weird.

Fortunately Jon Stewart made the evening funny. If only the celebs had more of a sense of humour. *worries he will not get to host next year*

At least Ang Lee - who's one of my favourite directors - won best director! And Larry McMurtry thanking book sellers was awesome because we got to applaud two of my friends!!

My favourite moment of the show was when The Day After Tomorrow (one of my guilty pleasure movies) was included in the "movies about serious issues" montage!!!!!! That made my night because it was just too funny! Oh! I just remembered Jon Stewart and George Clooney in bed together!! *g*

I am sick. Grumble grumble. I've had this cold since Thursday and I thought I was getting better on Sunday but it came back with a vengeance. I spent 3 hours waiting to see a doctor today because I was worried it might be more than a cold (and I am neurotic), fortunately not. Of course I still feel AWFUL and I wish I'd just spent the day cuddled under a blanket.

I did see BSG 2.19 but have no coherent thoughts on it right now, aside from liking the episode. However 24 kicked ass tonight and the ending completely surprised me and made me cry (not hard considering I've been on the verge of tears all day, but still an emotional moment).

At a friend's recommendation, I'm trying to sweat the cold out but now I'm feeling feverish and my brain is all fuzzy. /whining

ETA: A BtVS/AtS community has been having shipper polls (eg. who do you like better Spike/Buffy, Spike/Dru or Spike/Harmony), which can be fun but also makes me uncomfortable because I've noticed the whole shipper thing can be divisive in fandom. Anyway, two posters for separate Spike and Angel polls said that Spike/Angel aren't listed as an option because they're not a canonical pairing. I'm too wimpy to make a comment there (maybe I should instead of posting here), but they're a canonical pairing in my book. grrr

Battlestar Canonical
Ignore your friend -- stay as comfortable as possible, whether it means adding blankets or removing them. The closer to normal you can keep your temperature, the better. Also, tea and chicken noodle soup, and vitamins. (Sorry, my dad came out.)

Spike made a barely veiled reference to him and Angel getting -- um -- together once, which means that they are, indeed, a canonical pairing. Of course, my attitude remains: Who cares? As long as you respect the characters, do what you will with them.

I've missed a couple of BSG episodes, so maybe you can explain: How the heck did Sharon end up on that mission? I know she had her baby, but I thought she was still pretty well locked up for the long term. Don't get me wrong, it was great to see her, but what did I miss? And why, *why*, do I continually become enraptured with shows that have continuing plot arcs?

Re: Battlestar Canonical
Thanks for the advice - I like comfort! I've been doing the tea and soup thing (but without the chicken because I'm vegetarian), must get vitamins. Yay for being the dad!

Re: the whole Spike/Angel thing. I tend to think that people can define relationships too narrowly, so they won't consider Spike/Angel as a canonical romantic pairing because it was only a "one time". But - regardless of how many times they had sex or eve if they didn't - they have a significant relationship. Season 5 of AtS is very much about Spike and Angel, and as we learn in flashbacks, they have a long and complex relationship. Spike is clearly a significant factor in Angel's (un)life the same way that Darla, Buffy, and Dru are, and vice versa for Spike about Angel. I also like the Angel/Spike pairing because it avoids the divisive Buffy/Angel vs Buffy/Spike which I've seen inspired meanness about Angel or Spike. Angel/Spike is a nice solution!!

I don't think you missed any episodes. This episode (2.19) was the first I heard about the mission and Sharon being on it. I suspect that Kara (who's behind the mission and a CAG) vouched and argued for Sharon offscreen.

And why, *why*, do I continually become enraptured with shows that have continuing plot arcs?

Those are my favourite kinds of shows too!

back to the ship
I don't know if the BSG airing dates where you are might be behind us, so I hestitate to say too much about the episode I just saw -- and I'm not sure whether I missed one or two episodes, although I think it's just one. But yes, I can see Kara vouching for Sharon (although I still have trouble seeing Adama permitting it).

Thanks for the reminder that a relationship doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic ship, although that seems to be the way most people think of the term. Put that way, I've dealt with lots of relationships, although a romance has never been the forcus of my stories.

Don't forget the vitamins!

Re: back to the ship
I've definitely seen the most recent BSG - the one that aired on Friday, and ended with "to be continued".

I was pretty accepting of Sharon being on the mission (because of Starbuck & Helo's involvement), but as you note Adama would have been reluctant to agree. He does see Sharon as a military asset so that's my guess why he agreed. I suspect that having her on the mission will cause problems!

Sharon share alike
Either having her there will cause problems, or she'll save the day and gain some measure of trust back -- which could result in more problems with those who refuse to trust, of course. The BSG people are pretty good at piling on the problems, so either way there's bound to be trouble.

In any case, I want to see Sharon out of the cell and back into action again!

Shall we start a pool? I'm betting the Pegasus and at least one fairly major character is going to buy it.

Re: finale
I'm worried that it might be the Chief who dies, and I love him. My other theories of who dies are Helo or Anders. But it'll probably be no one we suspect!

as long as it's not Sharon ...
I'd rather nobody get killed ... but it is a war series, after all, so that would be pretty unrealistic ...

Ah, you sweet innocent girl, I STRONGLY advise that you just avoid getting involved in shipper-related arguments, especially with people who don't think S/A is canon. It's just not worth the agony.

But that's my opinion. The beauty of all this is interpretation anyway.

But I am one who stays happily sequestered in her multi-shipper friendly flist and mostly avoids communities.

You are very wise! Must avoid shipper-related arguments. Besides I have the tendency to like ALL ships because I'm never good at picking ONE of anything to be my favourite.

Yay for multi-shipper friendly flists!

I have no Oscar thoughts cause, like, who cares, right?
But I strongly recommend indulging in lots of chocolate because I've just proved its a wonderful cure for a cold.

*hugs you gently until the snot goes away* <--- I'm such a lady *g*

p.s Even Joss said Spike/Angel was canon and he's the Oracle.

I love your chocolate cure - best.cure.ever!!! I did have some chocolate chip cookies last night which seem to have helped. I'm feeling a lot better today ... it must be because it's your birthday!!

*hugs you back, careful to not get any snot on you* hee! 'cause I'm so refined.

I love Joss for his confirmation of Spike/Angel!

Take care of yourself. Feel better soon. Chicken soup is a cure-all. So is chocolate. Just not together. Yuck!

I had always assumed Spike/Angel was a fact BEFORE it got confirmed. As a matter of fact, I was surprised that they claimed it only happened once.

And yes, stay away from shipper wars. I'm a Spuffy gal. I accept that some folks will never get that. There are some pairings I'LL never get. But I respect the right of others to believe even if they're the silliest ones on earth. Unfortunately, others don't feel that way and will try to bludgeon you into submission. Don't go there, girlfriend! *g*

Thanks for the feeling better wishes! Love the chocolate idea (but not with chicken - hee)!!!

I had always assumed Spike/Angel was a fact BEFORE it got confirmed. As a matter of fact, I was surprised that they claimed it only happened once. Me too!!

I'm definitely taking your advice and staying away from shipper wars. I tend to like all pairings anyway, as I can never pick just ONE favourite of anything!

Well, I just voted for Spike/Angel in both polls of that comm. Joss said they're canon. Period.

And I'm disappointed with the Academy. They were cowards for not voting in BBM *humpf*. I believe much more in awards like Golden Globes and Bafta. Oscar follows politics, not merit.
[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com wrote:

That community baffles me because these polls don't seem to be the point of the comm. (but then I started a thread about loving dorky Angel so I can't really say much!). Yay for voting for Spike/Angel!

I think that I forgot Hollywood (and as a result the Oscars) is such a biazarre universe unto itself, meaning that the really good movies rarely get nominated let alone win. You're right, it's definitely more about politics than actual merit.

And I just got attacked by the poll's creator who said Spangel isn't canon because they were intimate just once.

So, following this thought line, Angel/Cordy shouldn't be considered canon because they never were intimate, except in that Angel's fantasy!!!

Weird people!!!

If you continue that logic - since a romantic relationship is apparently only about sex - Buffy and Angel shouldn't count since they (supposedly) only had sex once (you could argue that IWRY doesn't count because of the whole turn back time thing). Which is just silly because Buffy and Angel clearly had/have a significant relationship, as do/did Angel and Spike!

Most of the people who commented here warned me not to get involved, because the shipper stuff normally isn't good, especially if people don't recognize Spike & Angel as canonical.

And Larry McMurtry thanking book sellers was awesome because we got to applaud two of my friends!! That's awesome! And yeah, I loved him quite a bit for that. And I already loved him for Lonesome Dove's "We don't rent pigs!"

Yeah - 'shipper polls are...well, I've never gotten the purpose for those. Most of us know who 'ships whom (FYI from me: Xander/Angel, Xander/Cordy, Xander/Spike, Spike/Angel, Buffy/Angel and usually Xander/Anyone) and I've never understood the need to see how many more people 'ship S/B than B/A or vice versa.

[livejournal.com profile] karabair is awesome, isn't she? And I'm sorry you're sick!!! *hugs*
[identity profile] cordelianne.livejournal.com wrote:

hee! Love your icon matching my title quote!!

Agreed, the polls seem pointless. I have the tendency to like basically every pairing because I can never pick ONE favourite of anything. For example, I love Buffy/Spike but also love Buffy/Angel AND Spike/Angel. Xander/Spike are totally my favourite fanfic pairing but I love reading all sorts of different pairings.

As IF Angel and Spike and Dru never ever got it on. As IF half the tension between Angel and Spike isn't the tension of forbidden vampire homo love!

Come on now!

Although, as a poly kinda gal, I will never choose divisiveness in specific pairings. The more the merrier, I say!

The funny thing is the Spike/Angel thing has totally been confirmed in canon and by Joss but a lot of fans just don't want to believe it.

Although, as a poly kinda gal, I will never choose divisiveness in specific pairings. The more the merrier, I say!

You are so right!! I can never pick ONE favourite of anything, so I tend to love all the pairings. Some of my favourite fanfic I've read recently has been Buffy/Angel/Spike! Definitely the more the merrier!

BSG 2x19
I haven't written a review of the episode either - because I enjoyed it but it was all set-up for the finale and it didn't even have a very interesting cliffhanger! That said, great set up on a bunch of different fronts.

Re: BSG 2x19
Yeah, the cliffhanger doesn't have the excitement of the Pegasus/Resurrection ship ones. It was definitely all set up, but I'm interested to see how it plays out (it's just not edge-of-your-seat anticipation).
